Where to set the cross over for a sub?

If my front speakers are rated to 47Hz where should I set the crossover. I have two SC-10 Velodynes. Is 80Hz too high? Should I set the crossover at 47Hz or somewhere in-between?

First, how do you have them connected and to what? If this is through a receiver, you should have the sub's crossover all the way at max or bypassed and your main speakers set to small. 80Hz x-over sounds good though (receiver).

To add a bit; if you have the speakers connected through the sub itself, the crossover likely does not affect the output to the speakers. The crossover adjustment on the sub only affects the sub itself.

I'm assuming that this is a typical HT setup? If so, what is the resposne characteristics of your other speakers? 5.1? Does your receiver have a built in crossover?

80 Hz is generally a good starting point - if you have other speakers connected, as in a 5.1 setup, you would want to set the crossover to the next highest option above the highest frequency response of those. This will eliminate any frequency gaps or dips in the spectrum. Also, as most would recommend here (and I have fully accepted), set the front speakers to small, and let the frequencies below that roll off to the sub via your receiver's crossover.

That is if this is a 5.1 system.
