Where to buy Cheap Plexi?

I don't care if it's generic, but I want to pick up some 1" plexi glass. I tried pricing it on the net, but a 4x8 sheet is over $500 plus truck freight! Does Home Depot carry this stuff at reasonable prices?

They do but not up to 1".
However you may ask if they can order it for you through their distributor.
There is a specialty plastics store here in Fort Lauderdale. That will cut the exact size you need and only charge for that size. Try the phone book for a specialty shop, and ask what their charge is for the size you need.

??What for?????

By chance, I have a friend that works at Home Depot. And I could get a decent price off even special orders.
Maybe think about making a new friend ;)

Hmm...you have a good point.

I wanna build a sweet equipment rack. I want to use plexi because I plan on putting LEDs in the sides so the whole rack glows.

This whole idea sprang from the Red Couch thread and Buckeye's suggestion of the rack with a power conditioner in it. I wanna install a Furman unit in the top (underneath the top shelf) so I can have lights on the front of the electronics. This is only a 1U rackspace unit too.

The 1" thing is a must because I plan on milling out spaces in each shelf for a duplex receptacle. That way all the power cords can be like 6" long and make for easier cable management. This whole thing is a ways off, but it's always good to start planning now.

If you can't find a specialty plastic distributor in Ann Arbor, the Detroit area can certainly meet your needs: AIN Plastics (a national company with a local distribution center) and Cadillac Plastics (if they're still around) are two names I recall from my days in the sign biz. Check the Yellow Pages!

You can get it cut to your size, drilled for your hardware and even have the edges milled/finished as you desire. All it takes is money!

But there's no getting around it: the stuff's expensive, "generic" or not.

Try calling some glass dealers in your area. Look in the Yellow pages under such titles as Glass, plate or storefront. Also possibly windshield replacement. The windshield only guys wont be able to help, but the ones who deal in storefront glass as well will. One inch is very expensive. If you don't have any luck, let me know. I may could help out.
Do you need a whole sheet (usually 4 x 8) or do you know what sizes you will need?
I buy direct from glass mfrs and may could get you a deal on some, but shipping from SC on a whole sheet would have to go truck and would be expensive.

In Rockville, MD there is a place called Read Plastics who specialize in plexi. Many years ago (15+) we used to by parts from them to make contraptions that hold water and smoke :D .

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll make some phone calls on Monday if I have some time. The audio rack I can see exisiting in my head is so insanely cool, I just hope I can pull it off in real life.

I'm sure its doable, I'm picturing something like what you see in bars where they use the lights that light up the outside edge of the glass and it kind of glows, that would be really cool
