I realize many of you are sophisticated listeners and users but for a "just wanna get a good sounding 5.1 rig" guy like me the question is this:

For $1,000...which is the way to go and why?...

RX V1...reviewed well in several publications and has one of the best tuner sections tested in many years ( I listen to a lot of FM)
or the
RX V2400...has a lot of the latest and greatest.

I know the 2400 has some new features but then again, I am just looking for reliable, great sounding 5.1...and a good tuner.

I'm not into using external amps and special gizmos or gadgets and I'll consider another brand name but a tuner is important to me.
Room size is approximately 16x20 with 10' average height ceiling.
Thanks,
Mac Guy

Spend apprx $350 more and get the now discounted RX-Z1 which has a better amp section than the V1 and 2400 and is now available at a great bargain due to Yamaha releasing their flagship Z-9. Not only is the Z-1 a more sophisticated unit, but it also has superior Burr Brown d/a and features Yamaha's fantastic YSS-938 LSI.

Check this out. It also has been reviewed here at Audioholics quite favorably.

The V1 is a steal if you don't care about Dolby Pro Logic II. You can pick one up for less than $1000 easy.

JMOHO, but the only way to not care about PLII would be to have not heard it! I think it's a stunning improvement over the original ProLogic, and I use it for all my TV watching and any DVD that doesn't include a discrete MC soundtrack (and it's occasionally incredibly effective on music CDs, too).

Sniper, for instance, is a good movie that I'd all but given up on until PLII came along. That movie is not just improved, but transformed by PLII!

I agree. PLII does wonders on music, especially on two channel CD. I LOVE it and wouldn't consider a new piece of A/V gear without it!

PLIIx is another story though I will refrain from commenting until I hear a peice of gear that incorporates it.

Hi Yamahaluver,

Do you happen to know if the RX-Z1 is a 7.1 receiver? Everything I've read implies it is a 5.1 or 6.1 receiver. Pardon my ignorance, just not as savvy as I wish I was!

Alos, the lowest price I've seen is for around $1900... do you know a place that sells it for $1350?

Thanks

The Yamaha RX-Z1 is 6.1 with 8 channel speaker setup. There is the typical Yamaha front effects speakers which gives it the 8 channels instead of the typical 6.1

I will confirm the price for you and then send you the link to the dealer.

Gene, when might we expect to see your review or one of the staff's review of the new Yamaha RX-Z9 Home Theater Receiver? I'm also curious to get your opinion or see your reviews of the new Paradigm Studio Series Speakers, either the 60's or 100's.

Stiletto;

I am currently working on my review of the Yamaha RXV-2400. Yamaha tells me we are first in line to receive a review sample of the Z9. However, given its complexity and all of the other products on our plate right now, don't expect a review of the RX-Z9 before the new year. I will however post quick facts and FAQ interviews with their design engineering team from time to time however.

Paradigm wants to send us new Studio series products for review, but we are too swamped right now to take them up on it. Hopefully early next year...

Gene, Thanks for responding to my request. I've listened to the new Paradigm Studio 100's v3 and was suitably impressed. I am curious get your initial input regarding how you compare the value of the new RX-Z9 at premium $$ compared to the now discounted RX-Z1 - I recall your discussion of the RX-Z1 vs the RX-V1.

Also, do you have the Anthem line of processors / amps in line for testing soon?

Thanks,

Stiletto Pat

1db,

I have found the Yamaha Z1 for $1350 twice on Audiogon from dealers looking to move the unit ( making room for the Z9). Shop around and don't be afraid to hack on a vendors price.

Mind you when buying at cut rate price you have to expect just a basic DOA coverage. Vendors that move last years model cheap are not interested in supporting you too much.
