when making custom lengths for interconnects ...

do you cut for the exact length you need?
or
do you cut for the farthest component and cut all the interconnects the same length?

you see, i did the former and now that i've rearranged, i'm stuck with "short, medium and long" cables that i can't really use again.

so now for what i'm hoping to be my "last" rearrangement ... do i cut to what i exactly need? or cut all of them with allowance for the farthest component?

cutting with allowance means there's some slack somewhere - everywhere you DON'T need the long length.

IMO, it depends on your goal, Mike. If your goal is to have a higher probability of reuse in the future, then cut them all long. If your goal is to have a nice, clean set-up for your current system, then cut them all to length. I've gotten the impression that you can afford to buy new cables (I don't know what would give me that idea :D), so I'd say do whichever you want.

Personally, I wish that all of my stuff was wireless. :)

i know, i keep waiting for HDMI inputs on amplifiers :D
i'd buy the amp that had HDMI inputs.

but yeah, i'd like it to be neat, but would also like to be able to reuse them ... can't decide and i forgot to add a poll.

You could make them all short and just have a bunch of coupler jacks (like this for RCA interconnects, although you'd probably get nicer ones) to chain them together for longer lengths.

Just a thought.

i don't like couplers, i'm already in cable hell :) there's a forest of cable here ...

besides i usually make RCA to XLR cables :D

i opted for the long cables (future proof) option

but somebody tell me i made the right choice as opposed to this monoprice cable:

my XLR tip is the same price as that whole cable!

I think I'm going to go with the 'try it and see' response.
I say cut 'em to length. At least they will be right once.
Meanwhile I buy mine long so that I won't have to buy them twice. :D

i guess they're always wrong now :D

i'll ask about some cable management thingies - i guess this is the final frontier for my HT. hopefully im winding down the "upgrades"

I've done this both ways and now I would say buy them long and have some way to hide the extra length. When I built my existing cabinet I gave myself space inside each "wall" of the cabinet to store excess wire so all you see if you look in the back are the wires coming in from the side.

Wow those monoprice cables look very nice. Too bad I already spent $125 bucks for the set I have. Monoprice is great.:D

Well show us a pic!

I made a bunch of audio connects using Audioquest Sidewinder wire and Nacamichi connectors. It was fun but the amount of money I spent I could have purchased several sets of the premium monoprice cables.
