This news story brought to mind an interesting topic concerning the frequency range of hearing in adults:

Basically, its about this new ringtone kids are using that adults can't hear. It exploits the fact that as we age, we lose our upper frequency range. Keep that in mind as you talk about speakers and electronics that can reproduce 20KHz and higher. Most of us can't come CLOSE to hearing that high.

So what's YOUR upper frequency limit? Mine is around 12 KHz (I'm 40.)

I listen with my mouth open...
I'll find out in 2 weeks.
I work in a loud decibel machine shop and we get tested every year and the results will be here in 2 weeks. Then I'll say what I was last year versus this year!!

Based on my very unscientific test where I used Sound Forge to generate high frequency sine waves, my upper limit is 17 kHz - but only when the amplitude of the wave peaks at 0 dB AND I turn the volume up high.

Still, 17K is up there. How old are you? Teenagers apparently can hear 18KHz.

15-16kHz. I can hear the whine in our CRT, which is plenty. Most music doesn't get anywhere near that.

I turned 40 a few months ago. I guess all the concerts I attended when I was younger didn't damage my hearing too much. :)

15.3K. I'm 47. And now very thankful I didn't hit many rock concerts as a kid.

Hmm... I'm kind of tempted to crank up the volume and see if I can hear higher, but that might not be the smartest thing...

No, not unless you are ready to replace the tweeter when it melts at 20 watts or so, or less while waiting to hear a tone:D

A more careful measurement yields an upper bound of ~13.4 KHz for me. Still nothing to write home about
