OK ... please help me if you can.

I connect my DVD player to receiver using Analog connectors for 5.1 surround sound.
I use this DVD player to play SACD and DVDA music.

As you see on the attached picture, my DVD player is showing that it's outputting 2 channel audio ... and yet my receiver at Ext-IN is playing 2.1 ... I can hear my SUB playing.

Now ... I noticed the same thing when this DVD player was outputting 5ch surround without the .1 and yet my sub was active as well.

Did I connect things wrong? I thought Analog connection using Ext-IN is like Pure Direct mode.

thank you

Seems like you have some DSP mode activated. Or, those EXT Inputs can only work while DSP is active. What does the manual say about it?

The EXT IN expects an already processed signal. If the player is bass manged, meaning it is set with the speakers small and sub yes, then you will get SUB. If they are set to large and sub no then you will get 2ch ONLY.

Some receivers cannot apply DSPs or bass management to EXT IN since it is supposed to be processed at the source.

Interesting. Yes, I think I set speakers to SMALL on my Player and that may cause this effect. I'll check it out.

but now the question is .... is it that bad? Maybe having Sub active on a stereo sound is actually a good thing.

so I just checked the settings. On receiver I have everything set up as usual but that shouldn't matter.

On DVD player bass management is OFF and speakers are set to large. On option of Subwoofer, it is selected to be ON but I assume this is just me telling this player that when you do 5.1 surround music, to consider the sub. No?

So, now I don't know what I did but now everything seems to be fine. 2ch plays only from left and right and surround now does what it did before. When I checked settings on the player I had Bass management turned off, so nothing stood out to be wrong ... somehow it got fixed.

Anyway ... what I did notice is that player allowed me to control speaker volume but I have the same channel volume control on my AVR. Which one should I use? I kinda used both. Making sure that to my ear every speaker sounds about even.

Also, I have the option of Speaker distance on the player. All was set at 12 feet which is wrong, but I thought my AVR would fix this, however I don't think that Analog connection with EXT-IN takes into consideration speaker distance from AVR. Only speaker independent volume. So I changed it on the player.

Also, on the player there was an option to add +10 to subwoofer which I did. If I feel like sub will be too much, I can easily lower it down in AVR.

One more thing, the Player has option of PCM or Normal output. When I use PCM sound would be silent. Normal works fine. Thoughts?

thank you.

P.S. Biggest thing though that I am realizing is that room acoustics is probably half as important as speakers. My walls are bare and so when sound is loud it just becomes a pure mess. Need those defuse and absorption panels.
