What's wrong with my speakers? ;_;

I have a pair of KRK VXT 6. I've owned them for a 2-3 months and a few days ago the tweeters started sounding bad. They make kind of a buzzing noise whenever they try to hit certain tones. For an example of what I'm experiencing, listen to "Boomboxes and Dictionaries" by The Gaslight Anthem. Every note of the guitar intro causes a buzz. This happens at all levels.

I've tried changing the source and triple checked the settings on my computer, but nothing seems to make a difference.

I don't know why this started happening! The only thing I could think of is some test tones I run through them a little while ago at maybe 80-100db

I bought them online factory b-stock at guitarcenter.com. I'd like to just get these working, but I don't think that's going to happen...;[

Could I bring them into a local Guitar Center and will they replace them for me? There are no signs of physical damage.

I see people doing speakers excursions and stuff all the time. Why do they even make test tones?


And it isn't safe to play test tones, then? What is it safe to play? D;;
What if there is music that is just test tone sweeps with vocals?

Test tones are safe at reasonable levels. I'm guessing 80-100 decibels was not reasonable for your gear.

You made a common novice mistake. Tweeters are small and can only handle a few watts of power. In music program there is little sound energy in the pass band of tweeters. Although some program using electronic instruments like synthesizers can and do blow tweeters.

So when using test tones, you have to really back off the level in the tweeter range or you will blow them like you did. Only professional horn loaded HF units with compression drivers will produce high spl in the upper octaves. So for most speakers you can not produce nearly as high spl at 5 kHz as 500 Hz. If you try you have found out what happens.

Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer for replacement drivers. I have looked at pictures and they do not have the usual screw mounting. They must have some type of rear compression mounting.

What if some track on some album is just a sine wave? What other types of noises can damage speakers and how can we avoid them? I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to music without fear again. ;[

I don't think most of us are in the habit of blowing tweeters. You did it with test tones which is not music program. You asked a question with too many variables so no intelligent answer is possible, only BS.

As others have also said, yes, seriously
Some speakers are sensitive, very, others are not, like the ones you see on those excursion demos, large drivers. I bet you don't see tweeters on those excursion tests
Test tones have a purpose but one needs to know how to use them.
