What's up with the new Gladiator?

I was at HMV today and saw the new Gladiator DVD. I grabbed it with the intention of buying it straight away, but put it back because of the audio. It's in Dolby Digital 5.1?!?!? What the hell? Why would they release an extended edition with all new extras but downgrade the audio? The original DTS 6.1 was stellar! Does anyone know if there'll be yet another release, an extended edition with DTS 6.1?

I noticed the same thing about the last release of T2. What gives with these audio downgrades?

cheers,
supervij

I noticed this too a few months ago... and found a new DTS 6.1 copy of Gladiator on ebay ASAP.... seems as if some people don't feel the added sound data is necessary? perhaps they "needed" the space for extended scenes... etc.

imho, I'd rather the DTS 6.1 original then a few extra scenes.

There is only so much room on a dual layer DVD. When you add in the extra stuff, something has to go. Since Dolby Digital is madatory and DTS isn't, guess which one has to go. I guess they could have spread out the movie over two disks or made it a flipper, but who wants that?

I agree with what the guys over at thedigitalbits.com said. If they would have put the DTS soundtrack on there, we would all be complaining about the video quality of this edition because they would have had to compress it more to fit everything on the disk.

You can read their excellent review here:

Well, possibly some people would. The obvious example is all of the LOTR expanded on 2 discs. I myself do not like to change discs for one movie. But I do say that 6.1 is much nicer to have. But not at the cost of picture degredation. Heck, I am waiting for true 7.1 and higher to come out :)

Ya, but those movies were 3 1/2 to 4 hours long each. They would not have fit on a single disc no matter what. I think spreading a movie over multiple discs is avoided at all costs because most people don't want the movie interrupted in any way. Heck, look at how many people complain about the layer change delay, and that's a whopping 1 or 2 seconds at most. Of course I think most of these people don't realize what is going on and they assume the delay is caused by a faulty disc or player.

Speaking of a movie thats is long, that I would love to see done at 6.1 is Scarface (1983), BTW I also have the 1932 version.... That one I could do without 6.1 :D

The 83' version was re-done in 5.1, but IMO was not done very well. I would love to see a super-extended version done in 6.1 :)

I hope not

I am so tired of the format war, I would not buy either until a good year or 2 after the BS stops....

With the 1600 movies I have now, I'll stay with DVD-Rom... For quite some time..

Why, 99% of movies do a horrible job trying to do a 2.1 audio track let alone a 5.1.

With this statement I have to wonder how many movies you've watched at home on a decent 5.1,6.1,7.1+ system? Specially all the DTS movies I have, that were redone in 5.1 or better....

I have to honestly say, I have not ever had the pleasure of an arguement with you Privateer, but it seems as though most people here seem to think you have to short of a fuse, and do a lot of swearing.. Specially, Clint...

I remember they did a ban Mule thing here awhile back.
But with all the negative posts, you produce - I kinda wonder why they did not use the name Privateer over Mulester

Sorry, just saying it how I see it around here. Granted no one should be banned for speaking their mind. But for constant arguing and with swearing, that is something that should not be tolerated on a site that there are 15yr and younger people here.

Ah you obviously have no idea on what equipment I run, my center speaker is worth more then your entire setup.

So when a movie like Apocalypse Now sounds better the a huge budget movie like star wars 1,2 you are saying that nothing is wrong?

Wow, your center channel is more than 7,000.00+++?
Man get a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What does a center channel have to do with what I had stated anyways?????
Also just because you have a 9 million dollar center channel, does not mean you have heard good 5.1 - 7.1 setups....

Is there something wrong with you? My setup will slaughter your setup so when you comment on the fact that I have not heard movies in a proper setup it is to the point of idiocy.

No I am saying you are wrong. WOW usually I get hacked on for 4:3 material.
But anyway, Star Wars was done much better in a 5.1 over 2.0. Same goes with almost all movies that are done like this. The worst I have heard was Labyrinth done in 5.1 DD and 5.1 DTS, the sound was ctually better in DD over DTS and was not a big improvement over 2.1

No I did not, possibly not set-up correctly
Hell you could have the equipment of a 10 million dollar theater...

About what?

Star Wars was done much better in a 5.1 over 2.0. Same goes with almost all movies that are done like this.
You are missing something, I never said anything about starwars 1,2 being done in 2.0.

No I did not, possibly not set-up correctly
Right, because it is so hard to set up speakers.

Man you must have some nice toys, Once again there you go again with the personal attack slurs....
When you have real good equipment you can pick out the defects better in any movie, same goes for a strict 2CH music set up the better the equipment the worse poorly recorded music becomes.

Please go back to what I quoted you on....
I had said 5.1 over 2.1 or in this case 2.0 was done way better then just leaving it alone...
