What's the best way to import songs onto a PS3 for the HK 3490 receiver?

I will be getting my Harmon Kardon 3490 (2 channel receiver) soon and will be hooking it up (via optical) to my PS3 to play songs. I can either just play songs straight from a CD or I can import them onto the PS3 (from the CD) and play them.

However, I have heard that the HK 3490 has no decoder onboard and therefore can't decode compressed music. Therefore, in what format should I import songs onto my PS3? Or does the PS3 automatically decode compressed music (ATRAC, MP3, AAC) and send .wav signals out of it's optical connection for receivers to play?

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much.
