What's so special about this player to cost an arm and a leg?

I would haphazardly guess that it utilizes superior DAC's, have rather nice upconversion for DVD's, good signal to noise ratio, etc. In other words, nothing makes it worth an arm and a leg. :) I feel the same way about $5000 Blu-Ray players, etc.

Why you choose Monoprice over Blue Jean cables?

Price, Monoprice is more inexpensive than Blue Jeans.
+1

I find the insulation is a lot easier to work with on Mono speaker wire than it is with BJC.

If one cares, the BJC is twisted, and the Mono is straight.

One reason to choose BJC is that some of their cabling uses American stock to make them. Their Tartan line is still using Chinese stock.

Mono is better packaged than BJC.

Is this a thread about that expensive Onkyo Universal DVD player or about the best cables? ;)

That player is already a few years old. It supposedly uses the best of everything including the DACs.
It also plays every type of disc, short of BD of course. And it is built like a tank compared to other players.

Is it worth it? Not as far as I'm concerned. But some people need to have the "best".

Greetings from Wisconsin.

For $150, I'd say it's a good deal, provided everything works.
