Whats a good receiver around $200?

The answer depends on what features you are wanting.

For a surround sound receiver without audio processing over HDMI, I recommend looking into the Onkyo TX-SR506. It's generally about $200 at Amazon. I've seen it as low as $150, and it's currently at $212.

Yes im looking forward to using HDMI, but i dont really care too much about the Blu-Ray features as i dont own a blu ray. With that said..what do you think of the choices below?

ok between these choices what would you guys pick

Onkyo TX-SR506

Denon AVR-1908

Yamaha RX-V661

What would you guys rank those in order from best to worst?

From that list, I'd probably go with Denon. I'm surprised you can find the 1908 for $200. That's a nice receiver for the money. Another option is the Pioneer 918 which can be had for just over $200.

I would caution you not to buy Denon because they have terrible manauls. That leaves you with the Onkyo or Yamaha. Between the two go with the best deal you can find. Maybe even the cheaper of the two. Either will meet your needs. I would choose Onkyo, but I own Onkyo products and have owned them.

On the flip side, if you have trouble with the manual (regardless of which brand/model you buy), you can always ask on this forum. I'm sure that we could get you up and running.

All 3 are very good choices. I would say to go with the one you can get the best deal on.

This is what I say for all new receiver purchasers. Go with the best deal with a good brand. Sony is not a good brand for receivers IMO, but Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz, and Denon all make reliable budget receivers IMO. Any one of their products has a very low rate of failure and decent bang for the buck. I say go for the best deal. Harman Kardon is supposed to have the best music sound, but I went another direction because I was concerned with reliability. That may have been misplaced, but reliability is key in a receiver.

Why would you tell someone not to buy something based on the manual? That has to be one of the worst reasons I've ever seen. I like Dawg bought a Denon knowing that the manual was going to be crap... I never opened mine, he trashed his, but there is plenty of help here if you need to ask.

Next to that, OP, get the one that you can get the best deal on.

I have actually been quite happy with my Sony STR-DG510 receiver (I paid $100 for an open box model). Setup was very easy using the supplied microphone, just plug it in and hit the auto button. Speaking of manuals, the Sony comes with a very good one, easy to find what you are looking for. I've owned the Sony for about 6 months now, it is my first AVR so I have nothing to compare to, but I've been very pleased with it. What specifically makes other brands better?

Well thanks guys, i went with the denon avr1908 that i got for under 200 bux. I paired it up witht the JBL SCS 500 and they sound awsome together, the floor shakes!! THey come in clear up till about 85% of max volume (+5 thru +10db)

thanks guys, i dont think i did bad for spending less than $300 for both receiver and speakers.

Damn man... I've never had my 2808 past -20dB. I can't imagine how loud the + side of the scale would be.
