Why do you want a yamaha sub? there seem to be a lot of other subs out there, why narrow it down to yamaha?

The YST-SW315 is a great sub for the price. It has a MOVIE selector and a MUSIC selector that work very fine. Sometimes, when the sub is placed in a certain way, it sounds very good with movies (explosions, dinosaur steps) but sounds very boomy with music. When the MUSIC switch is engaged, the boomyness is taken away and a more defined-articulate bass is present.
Many people in this forum think Yamaha speakers are pieces of junk and it's not true; and they may criticize this MOVIE-MUSIC switch, but i had that sub for 6 months and it worked very fine and sounded much better that other comparable price subwoofers.

For $250 bucks, the price is fair.

Yamaha is not a fly by wire sub maker, they acquired Swedish company Audio Research in the early 80s and inherited that company's Active Servo technology namely YST, this tech made high amount of bass possible from small enclosure with a close interaction of amp and speaker design. Yamaha made some real good front firing subs in the 90s and their latest offerings namely the YST 800 and now the 1500 were among the first to incorporate class D amp developed and manufacturer in house by Yamaha. Just because they are truly well priced doesn't mean that they are inferior in any way to the so called hyped subs out on the market, Yamaha's vast resources and research enables them to do so and it is a victory for us consumers in the end.

The YST-1500 is truly a great sub, in class with the best out there, can deliver very good and tight performance for music with the ability to go low down for thundering bass for HT.

Depending on your room size, the YST 315 would be a very good choice as suggested by toquemon above.

I just got the 315, my room isn't huge, and it does a really good job. I'm still playing with the positioning of it just to get it "perfect," but so far so good.

I'd highly recommend the 315 for someone on a budget (as I was).

Vinny,

First of all, thank you very much for your take on the NS-555/777 Yamaha speakers. If others would leave bias and give them a listen, it is bound to change perceptions. Yamaha has till date made some of the most technologically advanced speakers like the NS-1000/2000/10000 series, they have always been ahead of others from way back in the 70s.

The NS-555 use the mica injected polymer from their earlier discontinued high end speakers namely the NS-200/300 which never hit the US shores due to inherent prejudice amount Yamaha speakers in the market, they were however reviewed quite favorably by the British and other European press and What Hi-Fi gave them five stars which is a rarity for any Japanese brand.

The latest high end speakers namely the NS-8HX is truly a killer but you wont find them in US, these speakers beat out other speakers costing far more and managed to win the coveted Grand Prix des Audios Award in 2003.

The only thing Yamaha speakers are guilty of is being accurate and low priced and I guess for most that is hard to grasp.

Nice One Yammy I'm glad that there are people who dig good postive vibrations..since the early 80's when I was a DJ back in Trini I was using Yammy amps but then I was a sucker for the Phase Linear and Carver amps..but otherwise respext bro I thought i was on a bad one for a moment as I got such bad feedback from people for Yamaha but as the saying goes never judge a book by it's cover...hey Yammy:) nice one

Vinny,

The Yamaha MX series have have no equal at their price level as well as above their price level, give them an audition if you can.
