Just kinda want to see what vinyls yall recommend. Im only 19, but im one of the few young kids that love the old music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Lately its been alot of Tom Petty, Tracy Chapman, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Cplaton just music like that. Ive recently found a place where i go to college and they have literally hundreds of thousands of records, so im in the process of trying to find a turntable to hook up to my HT. Dont know if they have been well kept or anything but i figure its worth a shot to check em out.

I just wanted to hear what you guys think is some of the best recordings out there on vinyl. Im the type that loves any kind of music so the genre doesnt really matter i just wanna get into vinyl a lot more because noone my age does anymore and i think its really cool. So just some ideas of some good vinyls to get my collection started.

Funkadelic records are great - decent albums (a few gems on each), and lp's do justice to the artwork.

Tracy Chapman's self titled album used to be my reference LP in my collection until bought Tom Petty's latest album, MOJO. The first 4 albums by Zeppelin are very well recorded as well as Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and "Dark Side of The Moon" .. Lets see Heart's "Little Queen" the Doors "LA Woman" Supertramp's "Crime Of The Century".... are all well recorded albums.

One of my favorites is the self titled album (also known as "6 and 12 String Guitar" or the armadillo album) by Leo Kottke on Takoma Records-it's still my audio benchmark for acoustic guitar recordings and is also recorded by one of the best acoustic guitarists ever. I also had the misfortune of owning the first CD release, which must have been made from a 4th generation dub of the master-the vinyl original (and even the reissues) are significantly better than the original first-gen CD. The original pressings (with the orange and purple label) are impossible to find (I found exactly one in the 10+ years I spent searching for it), but the later pressings (with an armadillo on the label) are easier to find and also sound great. If you want "virgin" vinyl, there are also 140g, 180g and 200g reissues available (some by Classic Records), none of which I have heard. If you only have room for one acoustic guitar vinyl recording in your collection, this should be it.

I'd suggest Electric Light Orchestra, there's a lot of stuff going on in there that can't be heard well on mp3s or even CDs

I had a dream last night (true story) about me finding an old record player, I think I should really get one, I have a couple vinyls lying around, finding this thread confirms my intentions ;)

I bought Dire Straits Love Over Gold on LP (180 grams) just a few weeks ago and absolutely love it! Not sure if it's the best vinyl recording ever, though. Brothers in Arms is recommended by many (recording wise), but personally I like that record a lot less (music wise).

Just now, I bought A Kind of Magic and Made in Heaven from Queen on 180 gram vinyl. I know the CD versions very well and I'm really looking forward to giving them LP's a spin or two!

Anything on the "Telarc" label which is direct to disc is a safe bet if Telarc is still aound.

Any Steely Dan record is bound to sound great. I particularly like the production on Aja.

Any of you guys in the NW TN. area interested in 60-80s rock vinyl. Shoot me a pm. I have alot of my albums which are in very good condition and some given to me by friends condition questionable (approx 100). Not intersted in trying to ship these things. Would accept "any" reasonable offer just to find them a new home.

amol duul II - wolf city (1973)
joni mitchell - the hissing of summer lawns (1975)
Triumvirat - old loves die hard (1976) - this record has more bass on it than present day rap - but it's gotta be on vinyl....
