Well obviously your best to listen to differant brands of receivers within your price range (and out to distinguish wether its worth spending that little bit extra) and let your ear do the judgeing however.
I would always recommend Denon and Marantz. (Alot of experience with them just cant afford my own, yet)
However Things to Look at in a...
Receiver:
- Your video requirements (HDMI, Component etc.) Look at the best way to hook up your TV.
- Consider future video requirements (Will you upgrade to a HDTV plasma or a LCD Panel?) Will you need DVI, Component (476i/p, 780i/p, 1080i/p)
- Audio Requirements, Recomended Power of your current or future speakers. (RMS)
- Current and Future Audio Formats (Dolby Digital ProLogic IIx, DTS ES, DTS Neo:6, SACD, HDCD etc.)
- Quality of Receiver (Brand, Origin of Manufacturer etc.) Best to stick with European Speakers and Japanese Receivers
- Digital-to-Analogue Converters (DAC's) If your budget allows try and find an amp with Texas Instruments Burr-Brown DAC's. Normally found in Mid to High End receivers.
- Audio Interfaces; Optical, Digital Coax etc.
