What to get? Mainly for HT.

Onkyo 805

or a

705 with a Rotel/Nad amp (secondhand/ mid range).

Running B&W 685 fronts, htm62 centre and 686 rears, 5.1.

Thanks for any input. I searched google and found nothing in the way of advice on this subject.

Nice B&W setup. I loved the 685's when I had them. What's your budget for a receiver and/or amp? Any specific features you need?

SmoKn,

Well depending on what your budget is I would try to find a factory refurb on the 805 and still get the external am the likes of a RMB1095 or 1075....Also you could take advantage of Emotivas current holiday sale and pick up an XPA-5 for $699....

But the 805 is superior in terms of its DACS and quality over the 705 for sure....

Well, i am buying form downunder (OZ), the prices are about $1400 (805) and $900 (705).

So i figure either an 805 or a 705 with a $500 secondhand Rotel or Nad.

Couldn't find any refurbished Onkyo's here in OZ.

ps. If i got the 705 i could add the amp later and shop around :)

Well you will here the advice that is generally best to buy the best you possibly can the first time even if it means going a bit past your specified budget as you won't be left wondering and asking the 'should of, could of, would of' thing...

So my advice would be to go with the 805 as that is a far superior unit to the 705 to start with, and spend a little extra time saving up for your external amp in the future. The amp in the 805 is a beast and will be able to power your system just fine until you can pull things together for a beefier external amp...

I think you will be happier in the long run if you get the better AVR to start with and then use it as a pre-pro latter down the road...

Yeh there real good for the money, i got a velodyne impact 10" to go with it. Sounds aight if must say myself. Not super duper, but it would cost a lot more to sound a little bit better. :)

Ok so I am getting the 805.

Some say go the 705 with a amp, but to be honest i think the 805 will be plenty in a small room. Plus far better SQ. If i need more juice down the track i'll add a 3 channel amp.

Thanks for the input guys.
