Five-way binding posts are the screw-down knob-type connectors on the back of nicer speakers and recievers. They're so named because you can connect the wire 5 ways:
1. Banana plugs
2. Spade lugs
3. Bare wire
4. Pins
5. Ummm...can't remember the other one! Maybe someone else can. Anyway, I always use banana plugs.

Not a bad idea, Diggerdave- a glossary, or at least a link to one, would be helpful.

Hmmm...here's a glossary, but the author only lists four, too! :p Maybe "5-way" is a bad name.

I could never figure out what the 5th way was either. Maybe it's binding to it's mounting surface?

Where's the hole

If there is a hole in the post it's 5-way. No hole, fourplay I mean way

I go here when I need to look up a term.

It also only lists 4.

I think, and I could be wrong here, but...

I think the 5th way refers to being able to either insert the bare wire through the hole in the screw or simply wrap it around the screw post.

Of course, I'm always open to suggestion. :)

Isn't that what I said?

Anyway, there's the connectors on the wire itself:

1) Bare Wire
2) Pins
3) Banana Plugs
4) Spades

Then there is how these are attached to the speaker or amp:
1A) Bare wire wrapped around the post
1B) Bare wire insterted through lateral hole in the post
2A) Pins crimped next to the post
2B) Pins crimped through the lateral hole in the post
3) Banana plugs inserted into longitudinal hole in Bolt Cap
4) Spades inserted as spades are supposed to be inserted

2A is never recommended so delete it. That leaves only 5 methods.

Then there is another possible 5th way, in which 1A and 1B are only one method because they use only bare wire, 2B, 3, and 4 are three more methods. And the 5th way is that the dual binding posts are spaced to accept dual banana plug connectors.

Not in so many words.

You mean here?

Well, to be honest, I didn't pick up on what you meant until you pointed this out to me. Sometimes, one can "oblique" an answer so it loses it's original meaning.

But, yes, I can see where you did say it first. OK?
