What speakers work best for a VSX-50 receiver?

I have a Pioneer VSX-50 receiver which has only few sound modes (Midnight, Flat, Bass Boost, Bright). I tried to pair it with several speakers (Sony floor speakers, Polk RT800, Jamo A325, Jamo A355) but I don't like the sound that comes out of that unit. The Jamo packages came with subwoofer. I intend to use it for playing music (not classical).
Has anyone had any experience with this receiver? What were the speakers used and how well they performed? My living room is 22' x 14'. Your advice would be appreciated.

The receiver has a primitive digital switching amplifier, you might like the sound of it connected to any speakers. What does it sound like?

If you become interested in replacing the receiver let me know, I may be interested in purchasing it.

VSX-50 DSP info

I took the cover of the receiver and i was surprised to see that it has the DSPD56367 Digital Signal Processor (which handles Dolby Digital, DTS96/24 and Tone Control). The same DSP can be found in the much more expensive Emotiva DMC-1 and Sunfire Theatre Grand IV.
Also, it has a toroidal transformer and AKM AK4529 high performance ADC/DAC.
It's not a bad receiver after all, I just don't like the fact that I can't control the tone settings in small increments.

I'm not familar with that specific model, but in general some of the biggest factors in choosing speakers are your wants, room needs & budget. Do you want really big, really little, or somewhere in between? Do you need efficient speakers? Do they need to be next to a wall? How much do you want to spend?

Room is 22' x 14', can't convince the wife to buy large speakers (like floor standing) and the budget is up to $900. That's the reason I was looking at the Jamo A3_5 series. Unfortunatelly Jamo A355 is 4 ohms and the receiver needs 8 ohms speakers.
