What speakers to buy

I have a $1600.00 budget. I have been looking at the B&W 683 speakers. Are these worth the price? Are there any other speakers I should consider. I want a well rounded speaker that is good for home theater and 2 channel music listening. I am also purchasing a rega planner 6 turntable. So I want the turn table to sound good.

Thank you

I am looking for a high efficiency speaker, above 95 dB. I been reading that with these types of speakers, one can power them with little wattage most satisfactory.
I looked at Klipsch, but they tended to sound harsh in the tweeters. But with their new line out now, with the rubber face plate and the titanium tweeter, curious if they sound less harsh. Any answers???
I heard many brands, like Totem, Monitor Audio, B&W, etc..but Klipsch gives me a rawness that all other brands seem to have not. It's like, if Klipsch were a music medium, they would be a vinyl LP and all other brands would be a CD, if that makes sense. In the end, that is what I am seeking, but with a warmer sound quality.
I heard of Tekton and Zu, but I am very, very nervous about ordering direct because of the sometimes poor package handling from delivery companies. I seen way too many delivery drivers mishandle packages, even standing, yes standing on them. Can you believe that? I guess at the end of the work day, they are just interested in going home, and not really caring about how they handle items.
Any advice would be appreciated.
My budget is 1000 to maybe, maybe 1500 for a Pair.

Do looks matter? I bought PSA 210 speakers which are 98db sensitive. They are freaking beutiful sounding speakers, but don't offer much in the looks department. The 210s are slightly out of your budget, but the 110s are right there and are 95db sensitive. Mine sit behind an AT screen so they didn't need to look pretty. Describing sound is difficult, but these are the first speakers that ever completely killed the "wanna upgrade" bug for me. I've had them about 3 years now and still get giddy every time I fire them up.

Rudolph, welcome to Audioholics :).

B&W 683 speakers are not worth that price. Personally, I would avoid them at any price, but that's my opinion, not yours.

I agree with everttT above, where he recommended the BMR Philharmonitor made by Philharmonic Audio.
http://www.philharmonicaudio.com/BMR Philharmonitor.html. I've heard these speakers and I think you cannot do better at their price.
Finding speakers that are a true 98db isnt common. NOTE Klipsch fudges there numbers.
You worded it mildly ;). I'd go so far to say that no speaker suitable for home audio can produce a true 98 dB. I've heard speakers that their manufacturer claims to produce 95 dB at 1 watt, but are really more like 90 or 91 dB.

Don't worry about speaker sensitivity. 85 to 88 dB is plenty. Full-range speakers that produce accurate and pleasing sound are far more expensive than high-watt amplifiers.

Please don't highjack the thread literally from yesterday. You have a different budget and wants/needs and should open your own thread.

B&W wont be close to anything required
Yup, true 98 dB is very uncommon. Not impossible to find though, but not going to happen in a full range speaker unless its huge and expensive. However, I think that most people over-estimate their output needs. In a medium sized room, a typical three-way tower speaker is more than enough to reach hearing-damage loudness levels without running into heavy distortion. The JTR Single-8 does look interesting. I have been interested in measuring some of these coaxial speaker drivers from Radian, B&C, and Dayton to see how they behave. There might be some really cool advantages to these designs. I have dealt with the Hsu CCB-8 which I really liked.

FWIW, yesterday is exactly when Bowers & Wilkins released info on the replacement for the 68xS2 series, so if you like them prices should be dropped. The new ones to replace them are increased in price.

How about KEF R300 or LS50 stand mount? Or the 2017 updated Q series? The Q750 would be the rough equivalent of the 683S2. Paradigm Monitor series also got a recent upgrade, plus a totally new midrange series, the Premier 700F is about right.

I'm a long time B&W speaker owner.

B&W makes fine speakers, there's nothing wrong with the 683s. But the short answer to your question...I think you could do far better in sound quality for $1600.

The two posts I saw on the Philharmonica BMR line would be the direction I would go if I wanted a flat, high performance speaker for $1600 or less.

I have a pair of Salk Signature Sound speakers...they follow the same design principles as the Philharmonica speakers...that is reproducing a clean, uncolored signal.
