My sig has all my equipment I currently have. I would like to upgrade to a 46" Samsung DLP, Denon 2807 receiver, axiom m22 fronts and vp100 center, oppo OPDV971H so I can upconvert to 720p. I cant afford to get everything at once I have about $2k to spend. What is everybody opinion on what order to get. Thanks Drew

I would do either the TV or the Speakers first. Those will give the biggest performance gains in my mind.

I'd upgrade the receiver and speakers first, then TV. If you are more into sound, then speakers/receiver. If video, then TV.

if TV then

If you upgrade the TV first, and btw that would be my choice, then consider the Toshiba rear projection dila design. My neighbor has a 52 incher and it is quite good. Samsung is also very good but I don't like the idea of the color wheel and a single chip. A 52 inch Toshiba, or Samsung should be available for easily under 2k. I have seen the Toshibas for about 13 or 14 out the door.

Ed, I think you're mistaken, Toshiba only offers DLP, LCD, and plasma. JVC does DILA, Sony does SXRD, and a few do LCoS.

I bought the m22 today. I will be setting them up as a phantom center and if all goes well I will be adding a center.

Thanks everyone. I decided not to get the DLP but get a projector, that will be another thread

Could not start a Thread so asking this question here..

Need to buy a Amp/Receiver. Narrowed down 2 which fit my budget.

1. Pioneer VSX-816-K
2. Yamaha RX-V659

I already bought 4 Athena ws-100 speakers for main and surround, and ws-60 for center channel. Using an old 100W 8-inch Sony subwoofer.

Any suggestion for which amp. i should use, or any other which would fit my budget ?

I recommend the Yamaha 659. Sounds great, plenty of power and decent features.
While Pioneer is a well known and trusted company Yamaha is ahead of them in this range. Tests and reviews of the 659 are very positive and I love mine.

Thanks Kai. So it should be able to drive my athena ws-100 speakers to its capacity. Currently my older SONY HTDDW840 HTiB is not driving the volumes high enough. Do you think the Yamaha would do justice ?

Those Athena's are not a heavly load, but they're not very efficient. You should be fine, but if you want more volume, you may need a power amp.

You didn't mention what you have for acoustic treatment...If the answer is "none," then that's what you have to buy first. You'll get a bigger bang for the buck and much better sound spending $2k on room treatments than spending the same amount on any gear I can think of.

Also Rob, by accoustic treatment what do you mean ? Can you point me to some readings which I could follow up ?

There is a section here at AH dedicated to Room Acoustics. By this I mean products created to ameliorate problems with sound stemming from room modes, reflections, etc. To this end there are bass traps, diffusors & absorbers.

It's no exageration to say I'd rather have a $5,000 system with $1000 of room treatments than a $25,000 system with none.

Here is a good place to start.
