I am extremely new to all of this, and had no idea where to go from here. I recently got a pair of mtx tp1200 loudspeakers running at 300 peak watts and 150 rms watts. I want to get a reciever that I plan on using for watching tv and listening to music while throwing the occassional party, but I have no idea where to start. I plan on eventually investing in a good sub, along with more speakers and maybe an amp seeing as how the speakers I currently have are cheap. A friend suggested the onkyo tx-sr606, but he wasn't sure if you can use an external amp with it. I would like to spend around 350-400 on a reciever. Any suggestions? Would it be a good idea if maybe I just bought a cheaper reciever and saved up for a good sub that will last me. Please help

I know nothing about your speakers but I just put a refurbished TX-SR606 in my bedroom and in my opinion it's about the best bang for the buck going. I paid $320 for the refurb. But no you cannot use an external amp with the 606. I believe the TX-SR706 has that ability but I'm not 100% sure.

Based on what I'm guessing are your speakers specs (92db Sensitivity) the 606 should play them to reasonable levels. It's easy to setup and I think a great 1st real AV receiver. But if you want an Onkyo that you can connect to an external amp you will have to spend a couple of hundred more. Refurb TX-SR706.

Great deals, great receivers.

Hi, and welcome to the club.

Yep, the 706 has preouts for all channels. And it's at a good price ($500).

Other great deals that you might also consider are: the Marantz SR5002 and the Marantz SR6001, each at $350 only, at accessories 4 less, same place as the Onkyo 706.

SR5002 -> http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR5002/Marantz/SR5002-receiver-90w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-yheater-surround/1.html
Just scroll down a bit.

SR6001 -> http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR6001/Marantz/SR6001-receiver-100w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-theater-surround/1.html

* The Marantz SR6001 is at 71% off from it's list price! An amazing deal! :eek:
Incredibly unreal! Just so you know.

These last two Marantz are all what you need for only $349. And get a good sub, like an SVS PB10-NSD for only $429, at SVS sub store on line.
So, for a total of less than $777.99 you got the best receiver and the best sub money can buy, period. And the true value is in the listening.
