what kind of RCA cables do i need to connect from the preouts on a receiver to a dedicated amplifier. the "traditional" RCA cables with which i am familiar are dual cables for L&R audio. i need something modest (not monster), but not total junk also. can you provide brands, models, etc.? is there such a thing as a single RCA cable (as opposed to the duals mentioned above) that are designed for preamp/amp connections?

RCA cables

Any 75 ohm RCA cable should work well, especially for this short 1-2 foot connection from pre-amp to amp. Since you have a pre-amp and outboard amp, you might want to go with someting a little better than radio shack.

Check out blue jeans cable for quality RCA cables in any length in singles or pairs. Impact acoustics offers 25% off to Audioholics through the end of the year.

www.partexpress.com carries varying levels of cables.

I'll second Bluejeans. Good stuff and you can get a complete 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 bundle from them to do it all in one shot. I would get a 2ft at minimum to allow for some room to move components and bend radius.

well, i bought some "acoustic research" standard audio cables at $14.49/pair. they don't say 75 ohms, though. i though 75 ohms was something only relevant to video cables. anyway, won't these RCA audio cables work just fine for connecting my preamp to my amp or are there special cables for connecting a preamp to an amp? the ones i bought are just audio cables, not 75 ohm video cables, but they say they are for connecting all sorts of audio equipment.

i just realized there is a forum for interconnects. apologies. but, since this sort of relates to amps/receivers as well, maybe i won't get scolded.

Actually, for audio 75 ohms is not a requirement.

75 ohm is a standard or video/rf and perhaps "digital" cables, although the need for that last one is beyond me. I've used 30+ year old nasty, thin, stiff and yellowed audio cables for a digital coax feed with no problems.

In the past, before ditital and video came into play, audio cables could range from anywhere between 50 and 110 ohms and there were no complaints of problems.

Since the advent of these newer technologies and their requirement for 75 ohm cables, it's more economical for the manufacturer to simply use 75 ohm for everything. All they need do now is just change the color of the RCA plugs on the ends and slap 'em in different packages. ..with different prices too, I assume.

They will work fine.

You're using them for eaxctly the purpose for which they were designed. A "standard audio" application.

Nowadays, I look for solid construction and good shielding. The first can generally be determined by looking but the second can be a bit tricky.

Yes, they are, but, they will work equally in other audio applications:D
As MarkW mentioned, even those older cables work just fine. Even a coat hanger works with audio digital signals :D
