You pretty much need to upgrade the front 3 channels, and subwoofer -- you can use a pair of the Pioneer for surrounds ..... what is your budget to start with?

Upgrade the front 3 speakers, the sub can wait a while until you have saved up some more money.
Placement, setup (crossovers etc) and room is very important, dont forget those.

Ditto: The speakers would be the area I suggest to upgrade first. Budget for Center and if (You can afford/ Have space) possible Towers.

I'd start with making sure you're maximizing what you've got. Might post pics of your room showing speakers and seating.

It would depend on your listening taste and priorities. I do not know much about Pioneer towers these days. Elac bookshelves I have spent some time with and they have a nice sound. Had a pair for about 3 years before upgrading. But for HT use I think a bookshelf solution would need a sub. (Your Towers selection most likely would too, but at this budget point, stick with sub you have and just as with the selection of bookshelves upgrade later.) For music only Elacs would be fine.

If you have the means, I suggest that you explore some other brands as well. Final advisement for what it is worth. Do not rush your decision. Take some time and explore. Happy hunting.

Those are pretty vague terms. We'd need more detail.

At the risk of over-simplifying there's volume (viewed across the audio spectrum) and distortion. After that, it's mostly the room (actually, even in those two it's often the room).

so now should I go for tower speakers
I wouldn't get too caught up in "tower" vs "bookshelf".

Those Pioneers are well-regarded, but at 85db sensitivity; you could have difficulty with SPL.
You also may want to check your crossover. It's certainly worth playing with the 100-120hz range to see if adding oomph to midbass helps.
Speaking of: Is the subwoofer your actual problem? How much have you played with positioning?

or shoul I buy new receiver
Almost certainly not. Start with the speakers (LCR + Sub) and the room when looking for improvement.

While speakers make the most difference, you seem to have two goals. For dynamics, I'd recommend dropping that into a a GOOD sub, such as SVS or Hsu*. That sub should hold you through several upgrade cycles,

Go for that first and see how you feel. Then, we can talk about different speakers but, be aware. they can run into big $$ considering that you'll need to go for the three front speakers.

* Others may suggest other brands as well. Consider their advice.

A sub should wait, you wont get much of an upgrade if trying to get 3 speakers and a sub for 500 and a sidegrade/minor upgrade is a bit pointless. That yamaha sub is fine for a while. Spend the money on front and center. A sub thats a real upgrade to the one you have will cost around 500 by itself so save up later if you find yourself wanting more.

Seriously, I have no life.
As mentioned, make sure your system is set up and operating properly.
What do you listen to, music or movies? How loud?
$500 doesn't go very far. Save your money for now.
