What kind of sub to get?

I'm looking to buy a Sub in the $400-$500 range. Something more so for music. I have an older Pioneer VSX-5300 amp and two newer Klipsch Synergy III bookshelf speakers. I have been told that the Velodyne subs are really good, but then I was seeing you guys used an HSU sub for your recommendations with the $3000 Home Theater System. Can someone help me out and tell me what I should get? Thanks,

Matt.

I would recommend either a HSU (like the stf-1) or the ULW-10, both I feel are very musical subs.

I haven't heard many velodyne subs, but i think the performance of their cheaper models can be had at a much lower cost with other brands.

The SVS line might have what you are looking for.

If my amp is ancient (which it is - Pioneer VSX-5300) and does not have a specific hookup for a sub - can I still hook up a sub and get the sound seperated for my sub and my speakers?

In that case, what you need to make sure is that the sub has internal crossover, and speaker level connections to the sub and out from the sub to your other speakers. The sub will pass on the highs to the other speakers and use the lows with amplification.

The SVS PB-10 at $429, won't work for you then, because it does not have a crossover. From them, you'd need to step up to the 25-31PCi cylinder or PB-12, which are $500 and $550 respectively, IIRC. I've owned the PB-10 and it is a great sub for the price.

There's also this guy: D12. I recommended it to my buddy and I got to put it through its paces this weekend. Not bad. It doesn't seem to go as low as the PB-10, but it does a respectable job and it's tiny for the output it is capable of.
