hey, im new and it looks like u guys know what yall are talking about so heres my question.
i have an Onkyo HT-S680 home theater receiver, its 6.1 channel, 100W x 6 and 150W for the subwoofer so its 750W total. but i want an amp to hook up to it so that i can push alot of watts into my speakers. but i have no idea what kind of amp, im thinking i need a power amp cuz i was looking at those but im not sure if i can hook it up to the receiver. does anybody have any ideas or what kind of amp i need?

To hook up a power amp your receiver would need preamp outs. Looking at the specs for this all in one system I don't see any preamp outs and being that its all in one I doubt they would have it, but you never know. Also "pushing more watts" into the speakers that came with the system isn't really going to help you. I would recommed finding a good pair of main speakers. I can't really give a recomendation without a budget.

i know about the speakers and what i want but i just want to know how to hook an amp up to my receiver. but what kind of amp? i asked musicians friend.com and they said that if my receiver has a line level aux out then i could hook up a power amp to it. but i don't think mine has that, it has the cd in and out and the tape1/2 and dvd and video 1,2,3, and digital out and s video 1,2 and monitor out. could i hook it up to the cd out or the digital out or the monitor out?

You can't connect an amp to any of those outlets.

i think this might work i don't know, i found a stereo power amplifier that has a dual rca input on it. so can i connect the cd out from the receiver to the rca input on the amplifier? it sounds good to me. if this is possible will it hurt my receiver if i connect it?

Mulester u saw my receiver, well here is the stereo power amp i was looking at.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.123dj.com/amps/pyramid/sm_pa1800.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.123dj.com/amps/pyramid/&h=100&w=100&sz=6&tbnid=yvq8AA-N7scJ:&tbnh=77&tbnw=77&hl=en&start=1&prev=/images?q=pyramid+pa+1800x&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&safe=off

you think it'll work? on the back it has 1/4" phone plugs and L R dual rca inputs but not female rca. thats why i thought i could connect from the receiver's cd out plugs to the L R input plugs on the amp. this won't fry my receiver will it?

Maybe if you hear it for a third time you will believe...

You CANNOT hook an amp to that receiver. It does not have a CD out - that wouldn't make sense anyway. The tape out is for sending a line level signal to a tape deck and will not have volume control. Onkyo hasn't included a tape monitor loop on their receivers since the TX-SV series in the late 90s. You can't use the video 1 out for the same reason.

To use an external amp you need pre-outs and for that you need to upgrade to the Onkyo 702 or higher. The only pre-out on your receiver is for the subwoofer.

Wow, dude these guys are trying to be nice about it and you arent listening at all, so I'll be the jerk to save them some hassle.

ITS IMPOSSIBLE, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO HOOK AN AMP UP TO THAT RECIEVER! GIVE IT UP!
If you really want to spend some money, upgrade your reciever and THEN you can hook an amp up to that as well!
