What is the point of HDMI pass-through?

I just bought a JVC THL1 (Home Theater In a Box) and it has "pass-through" HDMI, which means the receiver does not alter the video connection in any way---which means that I would get the same video signal by connecting my PS3 directly to my TV.

Is this true? My PS3 is connected to the receiver via optical cables for audio, so the sound is fine. What is the purpose of the pass-through video HDMI connection? How will I benefit by purchasing another HDMI cable and running the video signal through the receiver?

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!

The benefit comes from the ability to use your receiver as a video switcher. So, if you have multiple video sources connected to your receiver, then you could select the video source (without having to change the input on your TV) and audio source all at one time through the receiver.

That's the only benefit that comes to mind.

I believe multiple video sources in and then out to one monitor is a good enough reason for me! :D
