I've seen postings here and on AVS about an issue with the BDP-83s transport. But I have no idea what that means. What are folks talking about when they speaking about the player's transport?

Technically it is used in two different situations 1) Transport refers to the player being used as a digital "transport" only, in that it reads the digital data and passes it to another device as a stream for D/A conversion.

The other one, and most likely what you are referring to, is basically the tray/drawer.

Yes transport issue with the mechanical tray

I have two BDP-83SE units (the souped up editions with better DAC and analog outputs).

Both yield glorious sound but have been glitchy mechanically since I got them. I also have owned three earlier, lightweight Oppo players, two of which I still use. The older lightweight units had no mechanical problems at all.

When they went to the BDP-83, they apparently "upgraded" to new transport mechanisms which have been notoriously erratic. Mine now only recognizes any kind of disc about half the time. Even when a disc is recognized, it chews for a long time before figuring it out.

It seems strange in an era when even the cheapest players seem to work fine mechanically, that they have done this. I've had the same type of experience with other high end players- glorious sound, with trays that won't go in our out, won't recognize discs, etc. But never with the simple cheap CD and DVD players. Go figure.

I will be moving to separate transports and DACs.

I had some minor issues with my BDP-83SE that they were able to take care of. If you haven't contacted them about it, complaining about it isn't going to resolve it.
