What is a good 'temporary' HDMI receiver?

I'm certain I'm going to spend a good chunk of change on a quality receiver later in 2007 when the advanced audio receivers are out. I got a PS3 and I really need a receiver so I can listen to PCM soundtracks.

So basically, I'm looking for info on what would be an inexpensive temorary HDMI audio receiving unit.

What is "inexpensive" to you? How many HDMI ports are you looking for? I'd stick with either Denon or Yamaha for a receiver.

2 ins, 1 out will do. The receiver must be able to accept audio by HDMI, not just passthrough. I'm looking at about $500max. Like I said, I know I'll be upgrading anyways so I don't want to spend money on something obsolete.

The 1016 doesn't accept audio. It just passes it through to your display.

I would think any receiver that accepts HDMI whether it be pass through or not would be able to output audio from HDMI. When they say pass through it just means the video signal is untouched (no upconverting).

FYI most HDMI receivers only pass 1080i playstation 3 can put out full 1080p.
Yamaha rx v1700 will pass 1080p signal for about $1200.
But if you can live with 1080i for now you can find something cheaper about $500 or $600.

HDMI switch

Blue,
Your current receiver is not bad.
Consider one of the manual (or automatic) HDMI switches from Monoprice to hold you over.
In the next year, HDMI 1.3 and the lossless audio formats should be worked out making it a good time for a receiver upgrade.

So let me get this straight: I take the HDMI cable from my PS3 to the HDMI input of the 1016. I can now apply THX processing, DTS Neo etc, to the sound? I don't believe I can do that. I'm pretty sure I have to take an optical out to the receiver as well - which doesn't carry lossless audio.

I don't really care too much about the video. I want to hear the lossless PCM audio that can only be done through HDMI.

I think that statement just defeated the purpose of your thread. You're looking for the lossless audio that the HDMI 1.3 port on your PS3 can output but there are no HDMI 1.3 receivers out. I think the best you can do right now is get a Yamaha RX-V2700 which I believe has HDMI 1.2 inputs. Technically the HDMI out from your PS3 should work with any receiver that has HDMI inputs but the receiver will not be able to decode Dolby TrueHD or the DTS HD formats that are only supported in the 1.3 spec.

Hdmi 1.3

There will probably be some info on HDMI 1.3 receivers at the CES show in January. Even if HDMI 1.3 receivers are available in a few months, these features will cost you $$$.

I don't think the Pioneer 1016 does any audio processing of the HDMI signal. It is basically a built in HDMI switch.

Im in the same boat as you. Im looking at the Panasonic SA-XR700. It was made to pair with the Panny BluRay player. It has 2 HDMI ins and 1 out. Passes 1080p and up to 8channels of PCM via HDMI. It can be found for around $700.
Anybody know anything about this?
