I just broke a pair of headphones and the only one's i have now are the one's that go in your ear but, those are extremly bad for you ears and i don't have like any money. So, I would like a pair that will stay together and have good bass for rap music for my mp3 player and pretty cheap. I need like under $150 it would be even nicer if $100 or under but, yeah right:eek:. so, if any one has an opinion share your voice plz.

Grado !!!!!!
For the kind of listening you describe I second the Grados. Lots of raw impact. Like one is sitting in the middle of the band.

I second the Sony MDR-7506. This is also called the Sony MDR-V6(same headphone, but $20 cheaper). Do not get the MDR-V600, which is a totally different(and inferior) product.

The MDR-7506 is built far better than any other headphone in it's price range, so if you need a durable headphone, this is it. It has good low bass, so it should be great for most rap music.

I see some people suggesting Grado: they apparently did not pay attention to your request for a durable headphone. Grados in the price range you specified are not well made/durable products.

I totally disagree with the accessment that the Grados aren't built well. I have used a pair of 60s for a couple of years now while I jog, shop, whatever and I am not a gentile person. They have held up very well and they sound absolutely great. The only other manufacturer I would recommend is Sennheiser. Every Sony I've tried totally lacked bass definition and sounded like I was listening through cheese cloth, IMO. Grado 60s are a hell of a buy.

If you don't mind the 50's radar operator look, they're the best buy for $69 at several web sites (audio advisor is where I bought mine). I use them A LOT and I highly recommend them since I don't get fatigued.
If you need noise isolation, go with Sennheiser, Audio Technica, or probably Koss. $100 should buy you very well sounding headphones. You might want to check the forums at head-fi.com.

Because they still work for you means you have not abused them enough to make them fail yet, it does not mean they are a well-built unit. There are people who've had them since they first came out many years ago, and they still function fine. But they are still built poorly, and can not take the abuse of the Sony MDR-7506, which was built specifically for physical abuse in every aspect(stainless steel pivot joints at the middle band where main stress is located, stainless steel band, thick composite bottom ear cups, metal alloy top earcups, thick/durable cable, very durable/heavy plug, etc..)

If he is going to be listening to rap, shouldn't a pair of cans that isolate the outside from the music be recommended instead?

Yeah, that was garbage wording Mudcat. The Sony cans I recommended are excellent at isolating the listener from ambient noise so you can hear your music better. Provided you'll be listening with a low noise source (as in NOT a laptop computer), you'll be amazed at the stuff you'll hear deep down in the mix in some recordings.
