What is a Decent Multimeter for ~ $2-300

I'm interested in doing some basic measurements of:

AC LCR
AC VA
Current (preferably with clamp-on capability)
Voltage RMS & DC
Impedance

What's a good digital multimeter in the ~$2-300 range?

You;ll have a hard time finding a quality instrument to do what you want in that price range.

For everything but the LCR stuff, you should be able to get a decent FLUKE to do it all. Some may have capacitance or inductance capability too. However, those in this range that measure C and L usually have a very limited frequency range (like maybe one test frequencies at best). It's not until you get into the $700 - $1000 range that you'll get more than two frequencies. In the $2000 vacinity, you'll get test frequencies ranging from DC (or maybe only 12Hz) up to 100 or 200K Hz. In the $5K plus, you LCR ranging from DC to MHz.

I used to use a BK Prescision 885 handheld LCR meter which cost $650 and measured DCR and LCR at 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 1K Hz, and 10k Hz. Very limited. I now use an Instek LCR821 which goes from 12Hz up to 200K Hz, but cost $2K.

For a multimeter I have a Fluke 180 and a Metex 9170 bench unit. I mostly use the Metex.

One problem you'll have if you have not encountered it already is the resolution of whatever meter you choose. The meters specs may give ranges for measured parameters as "up to 50,000 uF (50,000 x 10-6 Farads:1 uF = 1,000,000 pF) or something similar. But what of the lower ranges. For measuring cables you'll actually need a milli-ohm (10-3 ohms) meter, becuase regular multimeters do not have the resolution to measure such small resistance. Similarily, your meter will need to measure in picofarad (10-12 Farads) and micro Henry (10-6 Henries)

I agree a fluke, or a good old simpson 260, that is a great meter. it must be they have been making them for a bazillion years!:p
