What if I do not want an universal player? I just want the best "movie" DVD player around to use with a Lexicon MC8B. Any brands and models that I should check?

Gee man, that REALLY helped! ;)

What about models? What about other brands (e.g. V.Inc.)? Any opinions on those.

Thanks,

JM

are you going to be using component or dvi/hdmi?
the Bravo players do real well using DVI but terrible using component
the panasonic S-97 does real well with HDMI and ok with component
i have the denon 1600 which is great component
but it seems now that there are few players that do well with component that are not universal players

The problem is that the best DVD players are universal players (Denon, Onkyo et al). These days even the cheap ( under $300) play either SACD or DVD-A.

So if you want just a DVD player you'll probably have to shop among the expensive brands (Thule, krell, etc) and probably spend upwards of $3500 getting no better picture than a $500 universal.

Guess you might be right. My objective was to spend LESS by taking out the DVD-A and SACD not more, by buying Krell or Thule.

I will be using HDMIor DVI, so it seems that the Bravo and Panasonic are good options to audition.

Any other thoughts?

PS:Shokhead, the Denon 3900 IS a universal player and it is NO LONGER in production. :p

john.michael,

The Sony DVP-NS975v is a very good player, upconverts over HDMI. You can find it for ~$220 on the web.

Denon DVD 3910..Great Video player..lots of 'tweaking' can be done.. check out the review off the main page here.. If thats a bit too much the DVD2910 also is a well built
quality alternative. If your not concearned about 'up-converting' players also look at the Arcam 'DIVA' products. All three of these units sound better than the Sony DVPNS-975V. It rates just above satisfactory, have compared these units and by far the Denon units are the best 'Bang for the Buck'..
