What hurts an AV receiver ?

hi guys

I've got an Kenwood a-65 AV Receiver and a Kenwood GE-850 Graphic Equalizer . I use my pc's sound card for music source .

I need some tips about keeping my receiver safe .

Can my pc's sound card cause damage to my receiver ? my sound card is an onboard AC-97

I don't believe the soundcard will harm the receiver. It's only a low level output device. Some tips for protecting the receiver: Keep it well ventillated and free from dust, being cramped into a small space or dust can cause heat build up and shorten the lifespan of your equipment. Avoid audible clipping/distortion, distortion from an amplifier clipping can damage speakers as well as the amplifier as can overpowering the speakers. Try not to make connections, especially speaker connections, to the amplifer while it is plugged in and turned on.

The more obvious things to avoid would be fluids near the receiver or amplifier, as they are instant killers.

Don't worry about things like PC sound cards when the world has lightning. I lost two AV receivers in one strike last summer (along with a TV, PC network cards and a cd player). I thought I had good surge protectors but I was wrong. I guess a half million volts went right past my protection. The best protection is an unplugged power cord.

Always what I do if I am home. I also have them on surge protectors (which makes unplugging everything a cinch.).
