What have I done ?!

I have the following components and would like to know if they will work together of if I'm effectively beating my head against the wall.
A Kenwood KR-V-6080 surround receiver (manual in hand)
A KLH KSUB-10 Subwoofer
Two Altec Lansing "Acoustic Suspension" Speakers of unknown age (probably ancient)

There is no output provision for a subwoofer on the receiver or mention of one in the manual, so I used the "front speaker" B lead to the subwoofer.
The rear speaker leads to the two speakers.
This works to some degree in "Theater" mode but then the balance does not respond. All the other Dolby, Prologic, etc, all sound very muffled and distant. So far there have been no sparks, flames or smoke!

I have no great expectations here, just thought it would be fun to have surround sound on the tube and maybe some decent sound occasionally and nothing here heavy enough to be used for an anchor! Help?

I think you need to take the output for the front speakers on the receiver and go to the input on the sub. Then take the output from the sub and go to the two altec speakers. This will send a signal to the sub and send a signal for the front speakers to the altec's. Right now it looks like you are only sending the rear surround signal to the altec's. This won't give you surround sound, but it will give you stereo with a sub.
