What happens if mains are too far apart?

I'm moving stuff into a room where the best wall for the TV in relation to the seating also has a wood stove.

Currently the TV is to the right of the stove about 5 ft, but I am reluctant to put the mains on either side of the TV because one of them will be extremely close to the stove.

How far apart can I put the mains and still get the job done? In other words, can I put the left main on the other side of the stove and move the right main to match?

Try to obtain good imaging. If you don't like the way they sound that far apart, try toeing them in a little. That is aim them slightly more towards you rather than straight ahead. Experiment with where they are aimed until you obtain the best sound.

How far you sit away from them should somewhat dictate how far apart they can be. Farther apart is generally better than too close together.

They should be toed in slightly no matter what. Pull them out from the wall as much as you can, and point them just outside of your listening position. Adjust to your liking, as Alan said.

That isn't true for every speaker out there.
