Ahh yes, the "White Van Speaker" conumdrum... where to start.

First you find an abandoned van down by the river. Open the door and look inside. You should find a washed up white motivational speaker dressed like Kurt Russell in Used Cars. I don't think you could get much for him, but given his current status, he would probably agree to an e-bay listing. Is it legal? I don't know, but I have seen people selling some pretty bizarre things on e-bay, and I guess if it's marketed right, someone will be dumb benough to plop down some cash.

Now to the question of quality...

Yes, it's legal to sell them.

The way they go about it is ethically questionable but some people, who have no idea about hi fi, wind up with speakers they feel proud of.

So, I guess it's no more unethical than some of the high priced cables I see being bandied about this hobby.

They do look impressive to the unknowing and, sound quality notwithstanding, that alone satisfies many people. Again, look at cables.

It's sort of like two addages:

"If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is"

and, for those who are happy with their purchase

"It's all mind over matter. If you don't mind, then it doesn't matter."

Ah, those white van speakers.

Internet certainly has changed the way these guys market these "white van speakers." Slap on an official sounding label, hire a bunch of internet "solicitors" to hype up these speakers in various online audio forums. And voola, these white van speakers have been updated for the internet age.

There is a question of product reliability/QC so far as the 'white van speakers' are concerned. In my experience, very low cost multi-way speakers generally have little, if any, attention put into band-limiting the treble drivers sufficienty to prevent damage in moderate to high SPL continous usage. Such a product is being knowingly distributed. Under this circumstance, I would classify failure to consider obvious design parameters critical to function as unethical of a magnitude beyond selling an exotic cable that at least has low probability of failure.
