What do I do with my RS232 connections?

Hi

My Yamaha RX-V2500 has a RS232 port on the back and the remote has some sort of pin conectivity under the battery cover. There is also software for the Rx-V2500 called "Receiver Manager". What is all this for?

Humbly,

Greg

They can be used for home automation programming and upgrading firmware. I don't think they are intended to be used together, ie; plugged into each other. Do a search on the receiver manager, there was a thread on it in this forum a while back.

Rs232

Right. So the question is, how do I connect my whatever (laptop?) to the receiver and do whatever I'm supposed to do with it? I've searched firmware for the receiver and have fond nothing thus far. Has anyone fiddled with the RS232 input on this receiver? I'll now do a search on receiver manager. Thanks!

If Yamaha has new setup software, you would plug your computer's 9-pin serial port into the receiver's 9-pin serial port (RS-232) and use the software to configure your reciver. This is, obviously, something you have already done manually, so it isn't necessary.

If your receiver is 100% setup the way you like it, then with the software you could connect to the receiver, and save the receiver's current settings to your PC. That way, if you have a service issue, or someone messes everything up, you can load it from your PC.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of new software being available that controls the 2500 - at least it isn't on Yamaha's main website. I know I have the program for my Z1 and it is pretty cool.

I use the port for control of my Z1 with a Crestron control system. The port allows for full discrete power on/off, source selection, and volume control for all zones. Good stuff when the receiver is 50 feet away from the room you are sitting in.

RS232 Connection

I'll try directly connecting to the receiver to see what happens along with Receiver Manager and see what happens. Does your Crestron setup allow you to change the DSP parameters? Is it connected via the RS232 or through a firewire etc?

RS-232 connection - and I don't play with much. I have the room set up the way I want it and I don't mess with it beyond that. Full control really is availalbe. I could adjust pretty much anything I wanted to...

but I don't want to.

The setup manager is for setup, my Crestron system is for using the system, not setting it up and tweaking it. ie: I don't want my kid or wife to mess something up by mistake. :)
