is the PS3 still the best BD player?

do I repair my busted PS3 for 120+ bucks with a week or one month warranty?

or

do I buy a new PS3?

or

do I buy a dedicated BD player?

typo on the thread title ... though fitting.

'to do' instead of doo doo

I'm not sure when it's coming out, but I'd get the Panny BMP-BD50 if I didn't have a PS3 right now. Profile 2.0, 7.1 analog outputs, and bitstreams all the HD codec's. Sounds like a winner to me. If you can wait that is! :D

Seriously, I have no life.
Others here indicate that it won't pass any of the hires audio in bitstream.

Mikey,

Do the logic here, $120.00 for a machine with no warranty (1 week). How much did you pay to begin with? $400.00? Now you'll be 520.00 dollars into it, with a week's warranty! If it breaks again $640.00:eek:, Go ahead and buy a BR player it'll be cheaper in the long run. Buy whatever is upgradeable.

sigh. this is not a spending I wanted to do. i mean, a new speaker would have been nice ... but double dipping sucks.

PS3 people, if wanted to use the PS3 for pure BD watching ... will I be giving anything up if I went to the 40GB model instead of the 80GB one?

If just playing BD, the memory shouldn't be an issue.

My mistake, it will decode all the hires audio (This probably means PCM over HDMI, or through the 7.1 analogs).

40 vs. 80gb doesn't matter for BR playback. I believe the key differences are better BW compatibility and SACD playback.

If you really want to spend, the Pioneer Elite BDP-95FD will bitstream TrueHD and DTS MA. It has a network port for updates, although not wireless, and HDMI 1.3a. The downside is that the MSRP is $999, and it seems to only be sold in retail stores right now in the US (I checked all of the usual suspects for better online price quotes)- I wouldn't even be able to venture a guess as to its availability in your neck of the woods!
