What are you using for control?

The last few months I have been revamping my control system for my Theater and multizone system. I want to know what others use and get some ideas on the following questions:

1) How did you go about choosing a control system?
2) Did you do all the programming yourself or hire a pro?
3) How many zones do you have?
4) Are you using, IR, RF, RS232, IP or a combination?
5) What would you like to add next?
6) How easy is it to expand?
7) What do you dislike?

I started out using all IR based systems so I had universal remote controls from Sony and Logitech for individual rooms and IR keypads from Niles for Zone control.

The good:

1) inexpensive
2) fairly easy to program. Each product had a slight learning curve but most of the time spent was just learning codes from each remote on the keypads.

The bad:

1) limited customizability. No real graphic control.
2) To get IR to work correctly all the time is nearly impossible. Especially if your spouse does not like to point the remote.
3) Limited macro capabilities and limited "status" functions.

My next setup consisted of an Integra MZA 4.7 and the key pads that work with this multizone AV receiver. I added URC remotes to the bedroom (mx-850) and Theater area (mx-810).

The good:

1) Keypads very solid IR control compared to a remote. Gives power and sources "status" on keypad and volume indicator. I also added a small LCD to view video on music server.
2) URC remotes offer extensive marco capabilities.

The bad:

1) Much higher learning curve for software. Integra software a bit outdated.
2) Still IR and MX-850 had inconsistent results when using as IR only to control sat receivers. I added RF and changed flasher location several times but always had key errors of no response or double commands.
3) URC software different for each remote so I had 3 different pieces of software I had to work with for any change to the system.

The latest system is now all URC. It consists of a MSC-400 master control unit, MX-980 remote for the theater and workout zones, MX-880 remote for the bedroom zone and a KP-900 keypad for the house zone. This has been a major step up. I am still using the Integra MZA 4.7 receiver but it is now controlled via RS232 and not from the IR keypads.

The good:

1) Full RF from remotes to MSC-400 so no direct IR.
2) RS232 control of Processor, MZA and sat boxes. Sat boxes can be controlled via a USB to RS232 adaptor so no more IR.
3) All macros are stored on the MSC so it just gets a trigger command from the remote and it sends RS232 or IR command directly to sources.
4) Full graphics control of the MX-980 remote so it will look and function like I want.
5) One software program and file to program entire system. Add or remove a source is much simpler.
6) I can read power and video status so I can control macros based on the state of the source.
7) Variables can be used to track sources through multiple zones so shared sources will not get powered down while someone else is watching/listening.

The bad:

1) No two-way control. I still need my mini lcd to view tracks and cannot feed that data directly to the remote.
2) Cost.

Well that is all I can think of for now. I'm not sure how many out there are doing this kind of thing. I know as we move more into IP based control this system will become outdated but unless you are "in the industry" costs go out of this world for this new gear.

Another funny thing is how the iPad will affect the control market and the cost of touch screens. A crestron or AMX touch screen can be several thousand dollars where an iPad is 500. I know control4 already has an iPad app and I'm sure there are others.

I have tried a lot of different things (mainly from your hand-me-downs).

I have now hired a very small man to just run around and turn things on and off when I tell him to. I pay him the same price that I paid my lawn guy (that Carolyn fired) so it is all break even.

Seriously, I have no life.
I'm showing my age, but I keep it simple.

I just have separate systems in two locations.

I have found now I use remotes little.

Since getting my new Marantz, now it set up, I only use the remote for a quick mute and sometimes to change volume.

I usually stand in front of my equipment and change inputs etc right from the front panel. It is much easier and quicker. On the Marantz you can change inputs, surround modes, and switch to direct and pure direct modes right in front of it.

The only remote I use to any extent one for direct TV, to skip adds, change channels and select recordings.

I used to remember we got on very well before there were remotes. The way this new pro/pro is set up has reminded me that remotes are largely a nuisance and an inconvenience.

I was considering a universal remote, but have decided against it, as I don't think I would use it much.

I have basically always preferred the ergonomics of my vintage gear, with nice big knobs and buttons. I agree that my layout is unusual and you might say old fashioned, but the equipment is at a convenient height.

So what do I use for control? Front panel controls as much as possible. Try it, you might be surprised!

Now you can be certain the old boy has really lost it.

I had not thought about getting a "wee man" to take care of this. If he is reliable then hey, why not.

Thanks for the reply Doc. I love the look of your room and all your gear. However I cannot imagine trying to set up a system to control that much gear. I'm only working with 2 receivers, 2 blu-ray/dvd players, 2 sat boxes , a media server and a few displays. You have all that plus 3 turntables. Also I need mine to be able to be run by my wife and 7 year old.

I've been working on the idea that when I go into the theater I want to press one button and have the screen drop, gear turn on, dvd eject and the lights to go down. All I need now is to get a kit for my screen and some new dimmers and I will be all set.

Yes, I saw the review.

Sounds like it may work just fine. I may have to give it a try.
Did you see the review in this months HT mag? Looks like a nice system. A bit pricey but seemed like a solid product.

Actually it quite simple. My wife, children and son in laws use the first main rack well.

It is a bit like firing up an airplane.

Switch on the five crossovers (one button and three switches)

Start power amps, that is four illuminated rocker switches for 14 amps in all.

Start pre/pro. one button. Select player. Start player and if an AV disc the TV. Put in disc and start play and your done. Just takes a few seconds.

Now you just need a complete server to rip all your movies and the only thing new you will need is a couch every 6 months:p Ive got a feeling if Dawg got to playing around with the level of control that his lavish lifestyle warrants, there would be a control only forum here:D

According to my computer, I have over 72 days of music loaded so I don't really have to get up yet I get hungry a lot.

2 hours in the gym 5 days a week prevent DVTs for me.
Nor can I. But getting up is good DVT prophylaxis. I have to get up to change discs, LPs and tapes etc any way.

Oh the server will come. I'm just waiting until you finish yours and work out all the bugs and I'll copy you.:p

Hey we should have a control forum here. Make it happen Dawg.:D

You cant tell me that Dawg wouldn't like to play around with this software..
BTW Craig, have you started taking the laptop to the bathroom for private time programming:eek: I think for being new to the software your making huge strides. I know a few guys that still use the stand alone editors:confused:

I use a Crestron control system in my home.

--1) How did you go about choosing a control system?
Since I'm a programmer/engineer by profession, this was basically a no-brainer.

--2) Did you do all the programming yourself or hire a pro?
I did all the programming myself, but this is typically something a pro needs to do. It can run from a day (simple) to months depending on your needs.

3) How many zones do you have?
I will have (upon basement completion) something like 15 zones total. 2 surround zones with HD video, 3 zones of stereo and HD video, and another 10 zones of stereo audio.

4) Are you using, IR, RF, RS232, IP or a combination?
I use a combination of everything. IP wi-fi panel in the family room, the MX-850 programmed in Crestron in most A/V rooms, hardwired panels, and all the stuff for the house head-ended in the basement Middle Atlantic racks.

5) What would you like to add next?
My next addition is hopefully going to be a Media Server which I will be ripping my Blu-ray collection to. This will be a process and I will get at least one Media Server and may try 3-5 different media players to find one I really like.

6) How easy is it to expand?
Expansion is extremely easy depending on the capabilties of my hardware.
For example, I have a 8x8 video matrix swticher - so if I end up with more than 8 video zones or HD sources, I would need a larger switcher.

7) What do you dislike?
Nothing really. It is extremely reliable and my entire family has no issues using it. Programming is time consuming, but at this point I just program in new features that I want for the system, not stuff which is needed to make it run. So, on the list of upgrades includes:
1. A page to lock the kids out of using the playroom TV on school days.
2. The ability to use the wireless headphones in the playroom instead of just the family room and the master bedroom.
3. Finish my iPod control so that the iPod can control the entire house without issue
4. Add a HDMI matrix switcher... mostly for grins and giggles, to see how it works.
5. Add the basement when it is finished.

I've picked up various panels and modules over the year via eBay and from customers who have upgraded. I also get stuff via eBay which I install for clients. Typically my end-user price for control systems and remotes is less than cost for typical dealers, so I am able to pass on some pretty excellent prices and people have actually said to me that the BEST decision they have made with their theaters have been the addition of the Crestron control system because it 'just works'.

Thanks!

Thank you for commenting BMX that is one incredible setup. I felt I could not consider looking into a crestron system based on there not being a bit DIY areana for their gear. I don't have the resources to get into this level unless I was doing all the programming.

Is the language used to program crestron based on any kind of standard or is it completely their own? Is it all command line based or do you have a windows environment like ccp?

Thanks!

Yes, that is an incredible piece of work! It would give me a terminal headache.

It is time to hand off to the next generation. I take comfort in the fact it does not make it sound any better, which is my primary goal. So I'm happy to continue to throw big switches!

Wow, you guys really make me jealous. I turn everything on manually like TLS since my gear's close together and I have to get up to turn the EQ and amps on anyways. My Marantz 4001 actually has a really functional remote so I use that to control everything. No macros but it works well for me. Every couple of weeks I think about getting a URC with RF base station though. The only thing that stops me is that I'd still have to get up to turn the amps on.
