Hi Folks

I am new to the AV scene. I pruchased an Onkyo TX-SR 702 and I require help to understand the benefits of routing the DVD component output via the receiver.

Thank you for your attention.

Routing all your video through a receiver that can upconvert everything to component adds the benefit of only having to run one cable to the tv and you dont have to switch inputs all the time. It's just a convenience thing. If you're running short of inputs on the tv, you can run a couple through the receiver and run a single cable to the tv.

Thank you

Thanks for quick response. In your opinion does the receiver process the DVD component input before forwarding it to the television or is this just an electrical connection.

If you connect the dvd player to the receiver with component video cables and then also use component video cables from the 'monitor out' to the tv, no processing will occur.

The 702 does transcode from composite/s-video to component though, so if you were to also connect some other device to the receiver using either composite or s-video, those signals will be converted to component. That is the convenience factor Spiffyfast is talking about. You only need one connection to the tv and the receiver will take care of converting all video signals to component. You never have to change the input on the tv. When you change the input of the receiver, say from dvd to video1, the receiver will switch the video and audio at the same time.
