How is this vs. say.. the HSU STF-1?
or the entry level SVS?

Don't know. But for a sub on a budget, it's a no brainer. (IMO)

I agree.
I'd love to see a <$200 sub review. For those of us who are on budgets, but still want good bass.

Those Dayton's are absolutely AWEFUL. My friend bought one and no matter where we put it, how it was setup....I mean...we tried EVERYTHING...it still sounded like a one-noted piece of junk. He returned it and got that Velodyne and, while it's no gem (nothing is in that price range really), it sounded great for the dollar. But stay away from that Dayton!

That's interesting because there are at least 2 members (that I can think of)on this forum talking the Daytons up.

I think they're talking about the Dayton Titanic sub kits. That sub is the cheap, ~$100 sub. As good of a deal as that is, i cna't imagine that it'd do too well. I mean, there's only so much you can get from $100. That said, if it isn't placed properly, even an awesome Velodyne sub will sound like garbage.

I've tried A LOT of sub 500 buck subwoofers because they are all over college campuses. Haha. I only heard the Titanic once, and not in an ideal situation....and it sounded good for the money. If it was installed right I bet it would have sounded a lot better too. I don't have anything bad to say about the Titanics really, but the little ~100 Daytons are just (my opinion) plain slop. I'd rather have no subwoofer than a really crappy one though. Some people just want bass, no matter what quality. If it was just going to be used for background music or barbeques and such, it's fine. But anyone on this forum is probably going to be listening critically or just plain trying to enjoy music on a personal level at some point.

It is a ton better than say MTX or Sony though! I mean, when I make statements on here, I do it with Audioholics "audience" in mind.... which is not the typical joe. I think on here it's better to recommend no sub rather than a cheap one. Especially when if you save up, you can get a pretty decent subwoofer sub 400 bucks from Velodyne, Dr. Hsu and SVS.

Save up is one thing. Getting that expense past the spouse is another. I'd rather have a crappy sub and at least get some bass for movies (that T-Rex in Jurassic Park simply disappears without a sub) than no bass at all which is what you are suggesting.

Yes, I'd love to have an SVS or Outlaw sub, but the reality is, there is no way I can get that expense past my wife.

So when many of us say we have a $500 budget for a Home Theater we don't mean that's all we can afford, it means that is the budget set by our spouse. :(

So in my case (since I can't speak for anyone else) it gets a little frustrating when I ask for suggestions in that price range and some posters (with all the best intentions) say "Save up for something worthwhile."

*gets off his soapbox* Sorry. I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread. :D

Haha, I apologize. At least you know it's with the best of intentions. If that's all she will give you to spend, and you want a sub, then give it a shot!

great. I am now thoroughly confused. I was under the impression that the Velodyne VX-10 should be better, coming from a premier subwoofer company.

I have the VX-10 and what I liked about it compared to other subs was the feeling that the bass generated was truly omnidirectional, meaning I was not able to point out the direction the low freq. was coming from. In fact standing next to the main speakers, it sounded as if the thumps were coming from the main speaker even when the VX-10 was like 10 feet away. Standing next to the surround, it appeared that even the surrounds were thumping, when they were not.

Does the Dayton have the same charateristics? Or is it just another box that simply generates a lot incoherent rumble, giving the impression that it is better?

your budget is 100-180bucks right? and you already have a vx-10 (and I doubt you'd give it up)

go for another velodyne instead of another type of subwoofer. at least you'll get the same quality of bass.
