Check out this bad dude, laddies. Markw can just stick out his chin tomorrow and get a close shave from this thing. No Norelco required.

In planetary (baseball) terms, this is a high, hard one. NASA tracks thousands of these. One was visible to the naked eye last month. One of these days........ Here is a recent and soon-to-be list of Near Earth Objects!!

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/

And you might want to remember, the U.S. and Russia are negotiating a program designed to destroy dangerous, approaching NEO's. I wonder what they're not telling us.

Maybe we can relocate here ----> http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/spitzer/20070711/spitzer20070711a-br.jpg

The producers are working on it. We're waiting for Purp-ray and HDMI 3.6 to be perfected for our straight-to-Quantum-LVD release. :p

But I suppose if you don't tell anyone....I can give you a plotline hint. Shhhh....think total chaos and uncivil war between the Cons and the Libs!! It's gonna be a bloody smash hit!! ;)

I am very interested in astronomy, and various topics that are related. It's really scary when you think about the huge numbers of large objects that pass directly through Earths orbital path.
(large enough to cause mass extinction).

Luckily..... space is a very big place, and absolutely perfect timing is required to bring about a direct hit:) IE... the earth has to be in precisely that exact point of it's orbit around the sun to get creamed as something big as it passes through the plane. Hopefully, Earth wont experience it's own "Shoemaker-Levy" event anytime soon!! Probability suggests not...at least not soon. But what is soon on a geologic scale?? Ok... probability suggests it (maybe) wont happen during our lifetimes, or our kids, grandkids, etc, etc, etc. Within the next 10k or 100k, or million years....it's a definite reality!!

Many other events of space origin can also cause a mass extinction. Besides a major impact.....solar, supernovae, when the poles magnetic fields swap, a direct hit by too near of a gamma ray burst, etc, etc, etc. may also end all life. One thing is certain..... human life will positively end on Earth!! In my opinion, the cause will be of space origin, and we will be completely helpless to do a single thing to stop it.

Global warming, anyone?? Woaaaah... just wait until the sun swells big and red as it swallows the entire planet!! Never fear....because long before that happens, all life will have long since been killed by changes in solar output. Life on earth will have ended more than 1 billion years before the sun engulfs our planet:D

Our planet has endured many previous mass extinctions, and more will come and go before life permanently comes to an and on this planet.

I never thought of you as the optimistic type Buck. ;)

I have always thought that we will eagerly end our own "misery", by hook, or by crook.

LOL... when the sun finally engulfs our planet, (it may not completely swallow it, but the sun will swell enough that it wont matter) Earth will have resembled todays version Mercury for more than 1 billion years:eek:

Ashley,
It's not something I worry about, but it's really fun to discuss the possibilities.

I mean c'mon... we all watched a major impact unfold in our own solar system barely 10+ years ago. (Shoemaker-Levy comet nailed Jupiter)

The discussion of all things space is very interesting to me. I also like to discuss the night sky and it's many wonders:)

I'm also a telescope nerd...

This is my 16" dob telescope (affectionately named "Tubby") that lives in my garage:)

I call it tubby for obvious reasons... it's quite the load to carry
(175lbs stripped naked of accessories)...LOL

Good Blimey mate I remember watching that a few years back and thank god for Jupiter’s gravitational pull! The mess it made on Jupiter, if those buggers had hits us it would be the END!

Keep in mind, that blemish shown on Jupiter's face in your photo is larger than our entire planet, and that scar was only a single impact of many after Jupiter's gigantic mass broke the comet to pieces.

Had "shoemaker-Levy" hit our small 'rocky' Earth instead of the gas giant....none of us would be alive today.

You guys make the postcard for good news and fun.

If you really want something "that goes bump in the middle of the night" to wake you up, think of those thousands of mites and bedbugs just waiting to snuggle up with you as you lay your head down.

Nawwww... I'd rather worry about the effects of man-made global warming;)

B-Nut...Tubby is beeeea-U-tiful! :) I'm envious.

But what's that boom box doing in your ultra-tidy garage? The speaker next to it is lovely. But B-Nut...A BOOMBOX??!! ;)

Mate I’ve been doing astronomy since I was 14 years old, it was only last week I had nice view though the telescope of Jupiter with five clear views moons orbiting, the others I couldn’t see, but detail like shadowing that appears in black & white is good enough for me, I would like better, but I don’t have the money for more exotic telescopes.

So that dent in Jupiter would pulverize this planet in heartbeat!:(
