Well, that was rather unpleasant...

Just a word on acute stroke care. If you even think you might have a stroke haul ass to an ED preferably a big one. You have a four hour window from onset of symptoms or it’s too late. If there is a clot up there a neurointerventional radiologist can get a catheter up to the clot and suck it out. I have same people unable to speak with complete paralysis of one side have total recovery and walk out of the hospital a few days later. Even if you go to a smaller hospital you can still get intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) which will dissolve clot but the catheter extraction is much better but requires a specialist only found in big medical centers. It is after all 13 years of training after college to be able to do it.

@Midwesthonkey- How is the recovery coming?

Let's add some of the symptoms for early stroke detection-

- Sagging face, usually on one side. If someone says anything, if speech is suddenly slurred or if the face feels numb, use a mirror, window or cell phone to look.
- One arm or leg stops working or hangs low- my mom lost the ability to move her arm, but that only lasted a few minutes. Roughly three years later, my dad couldn't raise his arm high enough to put his scarf on and when I saw him walk, his shoulder & arm were lower than the other and his spine wasn't vertical.

Both of my parents smoked for decades and we (my brother & I) couldn't get them to stop.

- The person who thinks they may be having a stroke should try to move their tongue in all directions- up/down/right/left- if this isn't possible, get checked out IMMEDIATELY!

Obviously, if someone can no longer walk, stand, sit upright or move limbs, it's time to go to the hospital but when someone is alone, the stroke may damage the part of the brain that controls this kind of analysis, so if a family member, friend or acquaintance says any of these has happened, make them go in, to be checked out. If they experience one or more of these symptoms, they might not say anything.

I’m on a low carb low sodium diet which is truly difficult. Diabetes sucks and I was never that overweight but I have a genetic defect that gave it to me (hypertriglyceridemia). Low sodium is for some other issues basically bone loss and kidney stones.
I have found an expensive but truly delicious bacon from Vanderbilt Rose farm. It is sold in a local market here but maybe you can find it near you or get on line. Basically 100 mg of sodium per strip which is one quarter what some bacon has. Plus it tastes way better. One strip makes a great boost to breakfast and offsets the cost about 12 bucks for a standard package.
Us old dudes gotta share our healthy tips. Good luck with the rehab. It’s a very hard road but you seem to be doing well.
My wife's uncle decided to go vegan due to his diabetes. It's been working great for him, but the poor guy misses meat.

He also happens to make the best BBQ I've ever had, so that sucks for everyone now that he doesn't do it anymore. He did make a ton a few months or so a go to give his smoker a send off. My brother in law has it now and is getting good use out of it, so not all is lost.

Is it the meat, or everything that's added to the meat that caused her uncle to stop eating it?

That really does suck. I love smoking meat.

Shut-up, Alex.

Going vegan can be quite difficult, depending very much on where you live, as you need to get all the nutrients (like essential amino acids and some vitamins, for instance) that is far harder, or impossible, to get from plants.

By eating some fish and/or dairy products he’ll get most of what he needs.

I'm not sure if it was 100% the meat aspect so much as what's done to it. His diet wasn't exactly good and I guess this much of a change was good enough for him to stick with it.

I told him as much. You can do it, but you have to be careful. We have access to any produce we need around where we all live, so he's not hurting for options.

I could never stop smoking meat. Just too tasty.

Extremely poor code ... :D

My doc says he eats meat about 4 times per year but fish at least 3 times per week. He suggested that I get with a nutritionist for an aggressive heart healthy diet but my nutritionist said a "small changes" approach was more effective considering sustainability. Also my nutritionist pointed out that since glucose wasn't an issue, the glycemic index wasn't the be all, end all for my carb choices. I failed to mention that our livers don't produce cholesterol well with the reduced insulin levels associated with lower glucose levels.

Most people don't do well on what he called restrictive diets. Like no rice and no potatoes isn't something most people can live with. My thing is not to stock it at home. Out in the wild, things happen but mostly I eat out of our kitchen and I don't buy those things at the grocery store. My whole life is restrictive. Why should food be any different?

Oh, they told me to get off Tumeric and CoQ10 because they promote bleeding. That's probably just for the chest cutting party. And the rate of infection and complications is under 1%. Yeah, sounded like bull to me too.
