Thanks guys, the problem here in Australia is not many stores stock DVD-A or SACD, and the ones that do have stock only have a handfull of them. Most places you go to the sales guys don't even know what they are:eek:

cheers:)

Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
Sting - Brand New Day

I'll second that vote for Eagles and Sting and I will throw in Santana's newer albums. Yes\Big Generator also comes to mind.

U2 - Joshua Tree
U2 - Achtung Baby
U2.. Anything pretty much

Do yourself a favour, and put on either U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name, or something like, U2- City of Blinding Lights. The introductions to the song are perfect, probabley the best ever, and send chills down my back when I hear them cranked on a good system. Trust me.

I just bought the DVD-Audio version of Donald Fagan - The Night Fly; sounds excellent, even though I only have capability to listen to the DTS version. I'm looking for a good/cheap universal DVD player to take advantage of the format.

pat metheny

I think Pat's new one, "The Way Up," is a very nice recording job. Crystal clear with both depth and presence. Lots of stuff going on under the surface.

I just had a chance to see Metheny in concert, and if his albums are anything like his performances, it would be well worth the money.

nchammer, you a U2 fan by any chance? took your advice and pulled out a 'best of U2 1980-1990' disk with 'where the streets have no name' on it. i must admit it is an epic opener. but i was underwhelmed with the audio quality. it may differ to the joshua disk, but the edges building guitar was a bit scratchy and the kick drum lacked a bit of impact i thought.

but got me thinking, WHAT IS THE BEST TRACK INTRO OF ALL TIME?

my pick would be:

'warehouse' from 'live at luther college' by dave matthews and tim reynolds. slow, haunting wailing vocals over fast building tense acoustic guitar. makes my mouth hang open and pulls my heard out of my chest.

but for something to show off a system, maybe:

dire straits: 'money for nothing'. wicked drums and some serious power chords on the guitar. very well recorded as well

infected mushroom: 'i'm the supervisor'. someone please try download this somewhere and tell me what you think. even if you dont like electronic music/psychedelic trance you might have to admit these guys are wizards in the studio. the whole album is quite a showcase of exactly how much can be done with moving air. this track- sounds like a timpani or something starting slowly, then some slow, very low, dark scary notes on a piano before all the sound is the room is sort of sucked up, then it hits you between the eyes, the hardest bass note i think i've ever heard. this actually makes me feel scared when i play it loud, so much adrenaline. if you want to impress your friends with your system this is the track.

I was recently knocked out by a CD I pulled out for the first time in almost a decade: Paula Cole's debut album Harbinger. The absolute clarity of the music was astonishing. If ever I've heard a recording that made me feel like I was in the room with the band, this was it. The songs are a bit dated, and her lyrics are just a tad too precious, but the audio quality is startling. I've played this disc for a few people, just to show them what a well-recorded album sounds like. Their responses, in every case, was a very quiet, "Wow."

cheers,
