From time to time, I find myself in the mood for some weird music. My collection includes several CDs that qualify. Among them are:
Future Sounds of London-Lifeforms
Captain Beefheart-Trout Mask Replica
Olivia Tremor Control-Cubist Castle
Mr Oyster Head-self titled
Butthole Surfers-Locust Abortion Technician
John Hassel-Dream Theory in Malaysia
and (my vote for the weirdest album ever) The Residents-Eskimo.

Anybody else have some favorite weird albums to share?

The weirdest thing that popped into my mind from my collection is:

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads

How about Tom Waits' "Bone Machine"? That may be the weirdest album by one of the weirder of all performers.

One body of generally weird music I always like to raise an awareness of is Scandinavian folk fusion. There are a number of groups and one label Northside in particular that are easily accessible.

Varttina: A psycho girl band - originally more folk, tried several different styles on the way, and their last few albums are worth more than novelty. For sheer entertainment though nothing beats the album "Aitara". The first song alone, the first 5 seconds even, are worth the cost. At least go to Amazon and listen to a clip.

Garmarna: Think slightly Swedish-flavored Massive Attack. I personally like international music just for the relief of being able to appreciate the music without trying to decipher lyrics and meaning. Sometimes that ruins what was a good song musically, you know?

Gjallarhorn: Pagan/tribal music with great didgeridoo and rhythm.

Hedningarna: A bit heavier than the others mentioned. Hippjok is a good album, great pounding drums and stuff especially on the club beat strange last piece.

Hurdy Gurdy: The entire album consists of music played on the Hurdy Gurdy, with the rhythm section built from modified samples. Cool stuff.

Hoven Droven: Another more rock-flavored band, except the album Hippa which is some of the best mellow chillout music I know of. The last track makes everyone feel happy.

Try them and get hooked.

Oh yeah, this is my kind of thread!

1.) The Mars Volta - Fast passed Latin style rock with brass and trippy sounds.

2.) The Blood Brothers - Ruthless rock set to messed up beats and sounds. Listen before buying.

3.) Fear Before The March Of Flames - Metal written to reflect the modern age and all of its problems.

I tend to lean towards the obscure. I have about a dozen albums from both The Residents and Tom Waits, both of whom have already been mentioned. The Residents have been slowly sounding more mainstream (Eskimo is an early album), and Tom Waits has been getting more obscure (Real Gone and Mule Variations are some of my favorites).

Some others I enjoy are anything from "Gogol Bordello", and the album "Obscured by Clowns". Bjork has a lot of mainstream stuff, but the Medula album is pretty unique, and sounds fantastic in SACD form. I have the three "Deep Forest" albums, which are some interesting world music, and "Studio Voodoo" which seems to sample from those albums. Although it's different, I don't enjoy Studio Voodoo very much. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is great African acapella - some consider it weird I guess.

The four original Brian Eno solo albums still hold up pretty well, weirdness wise. I will always remember playing Baby's On Fire for some freinds back in college. They were staring at me open-mouthed and going "what the **** was that?!"

Some the early stuff my Weird Al. He was pretty bizarre back in his college years.

I have only heard his parodies of popular songs (and a few polkas.) Did he do other, weirder things?
