Was considering Onkyo but....

I had been saving my pennies to order the new 608 from Onkyo but just today I came across a Denon AVR-889 for only $275. The seller claims this unit has never even been used and that he has a receipt proving he paid retail for it($799). Does this seem like a great deal? At first look it does to me. Would there be anything I would be missing out on if I went with the older Denon? I don't really care about hdmi 1.4 as I'm not going to be upgrading my tv or projector anytime soon. Thanks

That sounds way too good to be true. I'd make sure I met the seller someplace safe and where I could open the box and examine it carefully.

Kind of what I was thinking. He does not claim that it is in a box, simply that he has not ever used it. There seems to be a few Craigslist adds these days with people selling nice amps/receivers "unsused." I'll call him and try to feel it out. Thanks

You'll have to confirm, but I believe the 889 might not be easy to update/upgrade FW. It is missing the RS232, which is used with the 2309 with computer for FW. What I have read is either you send it in, or you may* be able to with optical/digital input, with CD-R.

Thanks for all the input guys. I decided to order a speaker from Axiom last night so that left me low on funds. I'm going to have to wait on getting a new receiver for another month or so. I'll post the link to the San Diego Craigslist add showing the Denon for $275 in case anyone else is interested. If the link no longer works then it is safe to assume it has been sold.
