Hi. I'm new to this forum but found it extremely helpful so far! We are upgrading our current surround system & I have a 2002 Hitachi 51" rear projection TV (model ? - I'm not at home to check). To my knowledge, it does not have an HDMI connection, and I just ordered a Sony STR-DG820 surround receiver, which I thought would be a good improvement. Then, I saw this message at an Amazon web site:
"I found this out the hard way. I connected my cable box and dvd player using HDMI, and my hdtv using HDMI->DVI. You'd expect that the reciever would pass only the video to the tv, and play the audio. Instead, the entire HDMI audio path is disabled because the receiver thinks the output device (tv) can't do audio.
This is a stupid and ridiculous design decision, and I've found out its shared by all Sony receivers, even their high end ES line.
I guess I'm the only one suffering from this since I haven't upgraded my Tv (an RPTV) yet. But other companies like Onkyo get this right, and this is something that a consumer would have no idea about. "
I need to find out if this is true - will they not work together??
