want to know if my HDTV & new receiver are compatible???

Hi. I'm new to this forum but found it extremely helpful so far! We are upgrading our current surround system & I have a 2002 Hitachi 51" rear projection TV (model ? - I'm not at home to check). To my knowledge, it does not have an HDMI connection, and I just ordered a Sony STR-DG820 surround receiver, which I thought would be a good improvement. Then, I saw this message at an Amazon web site:

"I found this out the hard way. I connected my cable box and dvd player using HDMI, and my hdtv using HDMI->DVI. You'd expect that the reciever would pass only the video to the tv, and play the audio. Instead, the entire HDMI audio path is disabled because the receiver thinks the output device (tv) can't do audio.

This is a stupid and ridiculous design decision, and I've found out its shared by all Sony receivers, even their high end ES line.

I guess I'm the only one suffering from this since I haven't upgraded my Tv (an RPTV) yet. But other companies like Onkyo get this right, and this is something that a consumer would have no idea about. "

I need to find out if this is true - will they not work together??

really not sure what your asking, but your tv should have component inputs so you would use them since it wouldnt have hdmi.

upgrading

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what I was asking either! this is a little above my AV-apptitude right now, but I'm learning with the help of experts like you. I think we'll wait & see how the installation goes later this week & I'll be back if something is amisss.
BTW, I'm VERY close to buying the SBS-01 speakers & center channel and the PB10-NDS sub... seems like they will be awesome compared to what we have (although we do have 2 M&K bookshelves & an M&K sub that died...)

will be moving those M&K's to the rear...Is this something worth doing?

For a home theater, the svs package is an excellent value. How large is the room?

unfortunately, it's the proverbial "great room" - about 17x22 with high cathedral ceiling & open to the kitchen..BUT the M&K's souonded pretty good in there!

opt for a sub upgrade and you will be happier. Just call CS @svs and talk to Erik ;)
