want decent sound, but don't have a lot of $

Hi all. I'm a recent grad that just moved into his first tiny brooklyn apt and I would like to purchase the best possible stereo system for a room that's 10 ft by 17ft. For the most past I enjoyed the Bose acoustic wave, but found its bass lacking and did not like it's performance with rock. Oh I should mention that I would like to spend less than $1000. All I can afford right now.

What components do you already have? Are you looking for strictly music? Strictly Home Theater? Or are you looking for a mix? If it is a mix could you guess at the split? 70/30, 80/20?

The good news here: If you liked the Bose, almost any thing you get will blow it out of the water.

I put my 11 year old PSB Century system up against the Acoustimas 10 system (brand new) and blew it out of the water.
