VU Meters for Emotiva XPA-2

Hey Guys,

So, I have an Emotiva XPA-2, and although the blue LED's aren't ugly, they're just not as cool as the old school VU meters in my opinion, so I made a new face plate with VU meters for my XPA-2.

The company I bought the meters from sells a control board too, so the meters actually seem like they're fairly accurate and are supposed to somehow be able to determine the amount of wattage as the speaker load changes.

To calibrate these I fed a 1khz signal into my amp, cranked up the power till the output was at 5.65 volts, and calibrated the meters to 4 watts (8ohm load).

After a couple days of listening, I am surprised how little power my B&W 803 Diamonds require at normal listening levels (less than 4 watts normally) and how much power they require when listening to classical with huge dynamic swings. I got very close to 400 watts a channel when pushing them to the edge. :)

Anyhow, thought I'd share to see if anyone else has done something similar.

awesome about making your own VU meters. I wish Emotiva would have done this in production!

Yes steadystate power usage is often pretty low but the peaks and bass is where you start sucking down the power.

Hey Park,

congrats on you VU's... a whole lot better than the standard blue leds though. Would you mind posting some more shots for us? Thanks in advance and enjoy ;)
