Volume Knob Posessed

 The volume is acting up. When I use the remote, it works about 50% of the time. I’ve changed the batteries and have two remotes programmed to operate the receiver. This happens with both of the remotes. When it does work, most of the time the volume races to either max or min volume (whichever command it accepts…+ or -). When I use the volume knob it works approximately 50% of the time and usually adjusts appropriately. I have turned it off and tried to unplug it. The result is the same. I thought I would try a post here before I reset the receiver and lost all my settings.

Any suggesions would be appreciated!
thanks

If you can't manually adjust the volume knob and have it work properly then the potentiomenter is probably dirty and losing continuity. Is this an old receiver?
Consider trying to remove the cover to the volume knob and cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner (with everything off and unplugged including power cords). There was a procedure for this type of maintence posted by Audioholics a while back.

Its a refurbished unit I got from the factory direct about 3 months ago. Do you know the link to the thread on the cleaning?

Is it the HK 7200 listed in your signature? I recall reading about that very problem on some other forum (can't recall...probably avsforum). I'd send it back and get it repaired/replaced if you still can after 3 months.

MDS is correct. Some HK receivers seem to suffer from the phantom volume runaway problem that you mentioned. I also read about it on AVS Forum. Definitely send it in for service if still under warranty.

Yeah, its the 7200 in my sig. It came with a two year warranty. hopefully it will be as painless as the last time i had to send it in...Ill wait to see what the service tech says. I sent them an e-mail this afternoon. the customer service has been great to this point. Hope it continues! Its no big deal right now. I am using my dvr box as the volume controler. If the problem needs fixing...i send it in...

to be continued...
