Hi all!

Got a free Marantz sr5200. Works as it should expect for the volume. When I turn it down it goes up! When I turn it up it goes up.

Controlling the volume from the remote works as it should. Any ideas?

You definitely need to perform an Exorcism!

Hopefully a factory reset will cast off those demons!

It's a garage avr, so trying to get a bunch of party goers to use a remote is like trying to stay sober during said party.

I can't find any info on how to preform the reset. I know how to on my sr7001, but this dose not have the same buttons (multi ch).

I only find a suggestion for a soft reset (unplugging it for 10 minutes or so).

Looks like what HD said was the only thing you can try in terms of a "reset", for that model. Cleaning will likely not help because the symptoms is pointing to the electronic parts of the volume control.

I took the faceplate off. Found the volume control, opened it up and cleaned the contacts with control/contact cleaner.

Its fixed!

I took pictures, but they are too big for the server.

I hope that works. Typically, if it was dirt on the volume knob, it would make all sort of noises, but wouldn't sound louder when you turn it down and quieter when you turn it up. That reversed up/down symptom was what led me to believe the trouble is on the electronic side, but you never know.. So it is working okay now, after the cleaning?

According to the display. Before it would show that it was being turned down when turning down. Now the display is smooth up and down in conjunction with turning it up and or down, and not jumping like before. I'll hook it up to some speakers later and report back.

Oh, if it was just "jumping" before, then cleaning should work. In your first post, you said "When I turn it down it goes up!", that got me (may be HD too) a little confused. So you should be fine now, congrats!

You understand that correctly. The numbers would jump around in the teens while turning it down, which was actually making it louder.

Has it been in the garage a long time or did you just get it? Might want to cover it with something when not in use.
