I'm curious on what most people would prefer..? a fantastic 46" LCD with nice 2 channel stereo built in? or a nice little 20" LCD with a fantastic 5.1 setup? please give good reasons for choice...

I doubt any LCD unit has a GOOD 2 channel built in system, the speakers are simply too small. What size room are you going to view in, and how close do you sit? I am of two sides in this area, a movies sound is very important but a larger picture is much more emersive, I would probably go with the sound first because you can use it for both movies and music. In the future you can get a larger monitor and still have a good sounding audio system. Also I see 36IN standard def TV's for as little as $50 used so atleast you could have a acceptable size for DVD while you save for larger HiDef unit..my 2 cents.

I'd go with the 46" with 2 channel stereo. I prefer audio vs video but a 20" screen just doesn't cut it even if the audio is top notch.

Stereo or 2.1 can sound very good but the screen has to be large enough to make the video portion look good too.

Given that choice, I'd take neither. I'd take the 20" screen and get a great sounding 2 channel stereo system. Music means more to me, so at least I'd have great music. I'd just have to sit close when watching a movie.;)

Yeah I feel the same way. Damned if ya do, damned if you don't. I'll eaily go w/ the 42" though.

However to make it interesting you should up the screen sizes. Like a 60" LCD vs. a 37".

No big screen flat screen has a "nice" internal sound system. Barely adequate, perhaps, but nice? No way.

How about a compromise? a nice 37" and good 2 channel setup? I think that's what I'd go with. 20 is too small for any movie watching, and no tv has good sound for anything other then some tv shows.

Well, if you are after TV viewing, that 46 would be ok in 2 ch. But if you want HT, you need both, video and audio. Perhaps save first then get it all.

Drop screen size to 32" and get a stereo system. Even a HTIAB will sound better than TV speakers.

I partially agree, except that 20" is just too small. Make a 32" and I'm for it. I used a 2-channel system for movies for years before getting my first surround system, and it was more than adequate.

LOL a decent 36inch 480i tv should be possable on the same 20inch lcd budget. Wouldnt have to worry about all the video scalling issues. HTIB 5.1 is low end but if it decodes dolby and dts you will probably be very happy with it.

Since when? Show me any 36" tv, and I will show you a 20" that costs a lot less (in most cases from the same manufacturer.)
